My jeep rocks and is perfectly reliable since building it in 2003. There is always lots of heresay about FSJ reliability.
I have a Volvo XC 70. SRT8 300, Porsche 911, etc etc.
The one vehicle that starts rain or shine is the jeep.
The easist to work on, the jeep.
SO what did you do to your FSJ to make it reliable?

Well, I ripped darn near everything out from under the hood back in 1998 and replaced it. Engine, all engine driven accessories. Rebuilt the axles, went through the transmission and transfer case...drove it for 50K miles then parked it...got a new truck, and it diverted my attention. Now, I'm renewing it again...but don't have to redo all the stuff I did earlier...I expect it to be uber-reliable once again.

Subscribed. Just starting my first Jeep project and welcome all reliability ideas.

I put a GM TBI system on mine. No more vapor lock and easy to start.

I stayed stock on ignition wires and use copper plugs. The engine is rebuilt with an rv cam.
To rid my self of fuel issues I went edelbrock carb and intake. Capped off fuel pump and used an ultra reliable electric fuel pump. Never once has it ever had vapor lock issues. Together with the alum intake makes for consistent starting.

The headlight upgrade i did was worth it. Under $35 bucks and totally reliable with all 10 gauge wire...

im with you - my GW is pretty much 100% reliable. I fitted an MSD 6AL ignition kit with heavy duty plug cables and MSD blaster coil. Rebuilt the carb myself and generally tidied up the mess of cables. Fitted new starter and removed the Cat plus airpump etc. I also cut out the fusable links and replaced with fuses as wiring was badly corroded (the crap cabling caused my only breakdown when i first had the truck) My one remaining prob is occational battery drain due to a mystery relay (which i cant find)

What is the headlight upgrade?
Thanks

I presume he means adding a relay between the headlight switch and the headlights. Power the relay coil with the headlight switch and use the relay to light the lights. This will also make your headlights significantly brighter.

Replaced all of the rubber lines on the engine and fuel system and normal tuneup stuff. After that I drove it for a while in stock form and still haven't found why everyone says these are unreliable. The biggest problems I found were because of previous owner neglect not bad design.

Regular maintenance and drive it every week at least. Let it know you care.

This was my biggest improvement. It made me confident enough to hand the wife the keys and turn her loose.
I am about to do my 3rd conversion...

Do you have a thread on how to do this?

Did a quick search and found some very detailed TBI installation threads.

There is a guy in the vendors section that will burn you a chip for the computer with your specs.
Happy reading.....

My wife drives the the wt to work everyday. Not even a hint of a problem.
Id like to do the fi conversion. Seems real pricey.

U-Pick-it here quoted me $120 for the parts needed; throttle body w/ injectors, wire harness with sensors, computer, fuel pump.
Like I said, I'm about to do my 2nd DIY TBI...

I'm about to do a TBI conversion to my friends 360 that we recently did a partial rebuild on. $120 is right in-line with the prices we paid for the stuff at the yard here.
I obviously went a much different route, but I'd agree with TBI being a VERY solid reliable upgrade...probably one of the best.

We need a very good jeep write up about this.

I'd have to agree on the TBI write up. Seems to me like the write ups (some are more like mentions than a write up) on here were never completed and/or didn't get in depth enough for me to take the dive yet. Would love to actually see some pictures and/or vids of tbi rigs!
I've read and re-read the write ups here and binder, 3rdgen, diy-efi, you name it. Have also bugged the livin'ell out of Aaron (chip burner in the vendor section) who was a big help. Pm'd back and forth about it with a few forum members as well....big thanks to them.
Have everything standing by except a fuel pump (can't decide on one/don't like the prices) and the O2 sensor (just need to pick one up).

I'd love to do a write up on it. The problem is, it's not going to happen for a month or so because truthfully, I'd rather work on my stuff than someone elses. I will take notes and put something together eventually.
Honestly, it's a carb adaptor, a GM ignition module, a fuel system and a hacked up factory harness. There isn't much too it. TBI only has something like 12-14 wires going to the ECM and that is probably the hardest part.

The write up on the Binder Planet is done on an IH 304. Not all that different from the AMC 304. I dont think I could do as detailed of a write up as Bill did. It was the guide for 2 of my set ups. Locating the parts is the hardest part. Bill has a VERY detailed wire section that gives you every wire in the donor harness and how to merge it with your factory harness. He even gives you pics of what to look for.
