View Full Version : Voltage Regulator ?

OK, so I got lots of questions today, hey it's raining and I'm not getting much done, so...

http://members.cox.net/chmsawsroofracks/vreg.JPG

... this is my voltage regulator (1970 Wag/Buick 350) is it not?

Any advise on hooking my GM style alternator (the kind with the 2 wire plug) into this. I did this years ago when I put a GM alternator on the Willys truck but the regulator was different, had more connectors, and I had a better memory back then.
TIA

yup that be a voltage regulator. I would go with a GM 1 wire. EASY EASY EASY!!! :D :D

If you are talking about using a GM alternator with internal voltage regulator you don't need your old external regulator.

Hey Tad,

Personally I would scrap the exteranl regulator, and drop in the later style
SI-10, it will be form fit the same mount holes and remove the need for
the external regulator.
If you are set on staying with the external reg

F - tem reg -> F term alt
2 - " " -> R term alt
3- " " -> +12 allways
4 - " " -> Switched +12 though dash light/resistor

For Internal reg model (What I would do)

? term alt -> Hot all times
? term alt -> Switched +12 though dash light/resistor

? = # 1 or # 2 on plug. Don't have the referance handy.

Found the referance,

On the internal reg-alt

#2 term +12 allways,
#1 term Switched +12 though resistor/dash light

I need to stay with the external regulator for the time being, I have a good size chunk of cash tied up in this engine swap and need to limit the expenses and get this wrapped up.
Thanks for all the info guys.

Tad,

Which way do the termanals on your alt point ?
From memory if || then you have a external regulator alt
if - - Then it is internaly regulated one. On my 72 Sub the
alt is visually exactly the same as a internaly regulated unit
but is externaly regulated.

Looks like this

R I I F

There is a lug labled "BAT" to the left of that.
Looks just like my 70 GMC wich is external and the 71 Skylark this came out of was external.

Mike, your reference above lists 4 wires (F, 2, 3, 4), my voltage regulator only has 3 wires and no lables, just plugs into the harness?

Hi Tad,

As near as I can tell from the 69 Chev truck diagram I am looking at the
R or relay wire (#2 on reg to R on alt) was not allways used , i.e. it is in
dashed line vs. soild that all the rest are, and it is not used in the external
transistorized version for the 130 amp set up, so best guess is that your
setup does not use that one.

With the regulator sitting on its mounting tabs with the pins facing you,
The picture shows from left to right the connector latch should be on the
left and the pins are as follows.
F #2 #3 #4 .

Sorry I don't have any Jeep manuals of that vintage.

Thanks Mike,
Been reading/researching some and found this...

10SI Alternator Wiring (http://www.oldengine.org/unfaq/10si.htm)

...pretty sure this was how I set it up in the Willys when I switched from an generator to an alternator setup. Looks like I'll have to unwrap the wiring harness to figure it out but need to clean up some of that mess anyway.

Tad,
If you need a new reg should be around $15. I think one for a GM or Ford would work. You can get heavy-duty transistorized ones. Its dirt cheap to go with the Delcotron 10SI internal reg alt.

Though one thing I've been thinking of if the reg is outside of the alt doesnt that mean its exposed to less heat? Being up on the fenderwell or firewall away from the alt or engine. I've been thinking of keeping my Jeep and Skylark externally regulated for this reason.

Downfall of couse is all those wires to go bad.

The 10SI is the internaly regulated model, that is the one I would use,
the connector for the alt #1 #2 teminals is avalible in every parts store
I been in for $5 or so, the 10SI was used in every GM car/truck from
~72->late 80's rebuilt one are under $50 at the auto parts store or
$10 or so from the pick and pull, easy to rebuild ...
Srcap the external regulator ! (Only 2 wires to figure out)

Never mind, mine is external, I just found a page with some decent ID pics...

Thanks Mike
