I was wondering what kind of maintence was required for the drive train on my 89 wag, i know simple engine maintenance but i was wondering how often i should change differential and t case fluids and if there was any other stuff i should look out for specific to 4x4s. Im bout to service the trans and rebuild the wheel bearings, but i wasnt sure what else needs to be done. I also had a queston about the four wheel drive, i discovered that its nice in the rain, but what is the maximum speed you can drive in 4x4? also whats the max speed for high and lo ranges? Thanks

Change all you gear box fluids every 20,000 and at least check them more often especially if you're into water crossings. Also make sure all your vent lines are connected so they don't allow water in. I'd run the x-case in 4WD once a month or so if you don't wheel much, keeps the vac motor from freezing up.

I have never had a need to go over 5mph in low range. why would you need to?

Some u-joints and driveshafts have zerk fittings so you can add grease.

k, i never tried to go fast in lo range, but i flipped the switch on the dash and was goin 55 in four wheel drive down the road cuz it was rainin and i heard you can leave it on full time and I was wonderin if that was bad, i hope not.

You can drive in 4-Hi at any speed.

I've had mine up to 20-25mph on dirt trails in 4-Lo, but 15-20mph is more comfortable. The cage for the low-range reduction planetary gears rides on a bronze bushing, and that doesn't take kindly to extended travel at high speeds in 4-Lo, especially if the fluid is low or dirty.

You can go as fast as you want in 4WD High. You can also leave it 4WD high all year around. In low range though you need to be on a slick surface or you'll bind the drive train and start breaking very expensive pieces. Low is for crawling speeds. If you need to go fast shift back into high range. With 3.31 gears, stock 29" tires driving in LO range at 55 mph the engine is turning about 5500 rpm...this is not a good thing for any length of time. These motors aren't built to steadily run at that rpm. Especially an old motor. :(

As far as I've seen it's worse :D ..but you can't get much worse :D ..you just can't so don't worry about it at all..it doesn't do you or anyone any good. ;) ...
