Hi everyone. This is my first post here! Been reading for about a month and I'm impressed. Bought me an'87 Gw a month ago with a siezed engine and no reverse (and 135,000 on the odometer). Thought I got lucky for a while because I was able to get her moving with a set of rod bearings and emery cloth, and a used low/reverse servo piston took care of the tranny.
But now it's time to fix the engine right. It's developed a little knock and of course the oil pressure is WAY low. I already looked at the oil pump and it's shot. So after pricing all the parts to get the engine in tip-top shape I have deciced I could replace it cheaper. Here's the ?'s. I have a wrecked '89 GMC 1/2 ton truck with a great engine. I would like to install it using one of Advanced Adaptors kits and keep the 727. Has anyone here tried this? Looks like a pretty easy fit, and they said with the adaptor all will work pretty good. I can wire up the EFI myself having had a lot of experience with the setup. What do ya'll think? The adaptor is about the same price as the timing cover and reapired crank, and the exhaust work will be cheap enough, so my first response is "go for it". Is there something I don't see? I do have a welder and torch too, so motor mounts are not a prob.

WOW!!!! First post and you're you neck deep.... I LOVE IT!!! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Welcome to the Forum. There are several people on the fourm that have experience in swapping the engines/tranneis/T-cases from "donor" vehicles.... You will find a wealth of info here from some ..unfortunately I cna't be of too much help in this area...not ever doing it myself...yet. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

Good luck and keep us posted on the progress and I'm sure your knowledgeable can be of use to someone here... so again.. WELCOME!!!

welcome to the club...

one of the things i miss most with my 87 GW is the overdrive, if the truck has an overdrive automatic, i would recommend putting the adapter on the tranny/xfer case side and use the chevy od. that is my long term plans...

good luck with the GW

Yep, I kinda dove into this Jeep thing head first, Someone here wasn't kindding when they said J.E.E.P. means "Just Empty Every Pocket"
I thought a lot about trying to overdrive the GW, I have a Dodge 518 tranny out of a 4x4, and being a Dodge boy that was my first thought, get 360 Chrysler motor and use that tranny. But having a complete '88 GMC to rob parts from(EFI, wiring harness, ect.) I decided that would be the cheapest route, and those T.B.I. systems are well known for reliabilty and good MPG. BUT, the tranny is a 2 wheel drive, and I don't have a 4x4 tailshaft, and again, being a Dodge guy I'm a 727 fan. Would the O.D. be worth the added $$$$ for the parts to change it into a 4x4, then adapt it to my t-case, then have the driveshafts re-worked for length?
And thanks for the help, I'm going to need it! Nice to be here guys!

An overdrive tranny would be nice as you could run 4.10 gears at highway speed and not have the motor running at 3500 rpm.
