I'm looking to buy an FSJ that I will register as off road only so I dont have to insure it. Only thing about that is California law won't let me drive it to the trails so I would have to tow it. I am also currently looking for a daily driver truck and will base what I get on weather or not it can tow an FSJ. What is the weight of different FSJ's? I am mainly looking at J-series trucks and Cherokees. Any suggestions on what kind of truck to tow it with? I would register the truck as a daily driver, but my parents think I'm gonna wreck it off road and not be able to get to school, and can't afford insurance on 2 trucks!
Any help is appreciated.

The FSJ's tip the scales at 4500+lb, the dry shipping weight of a Wag was listed at around 4300lb, I do not remember what year.
Most say the things are closer to 5000lb, which means a class 3 hitch will be pushing it, even though I towed my chero on a dolly 100 miles with a class 3 and a 93 chevy ext cab. I think a good pickup would work ok and maybe a good tow bar setup welded to the FSJ so it will not come loose.

I still have the factory door jam metal plate in my 78 Wag...

GVWR 6200lbs
GAWR front 3215 lbs
GAWR rear 3215 lbs

this is stock weght... now add your list of mods(their weight, that is)... ie. oversized rims/tires, custom bumpers, tire rack, safari rack, push bar, off-road gear and the like.

I will use my 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban (just purchased this "FSJ HAULER") to haul the rig when I need to... but haven't had to yet... I didn't want to chance a 1/2 ton pulling such a load in the mountains, so I opted for the 3/4 ton. Better safe than sorry in my opinion ... my .02 worth

i have to have added at least 75 lbs of bumper,50-75 lbs per tire, not to mention whatever weight all the spare stuff i carry adds.i guess i did lose 50 lbs or so of roof http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/smile.gif

a friend of mine had his shortbed chevy, which is a longer wheelbase than a wag/chero with 33s on a scale.without him in it it weighed in at 4300 lbs with a th350 and np 203 xfer(which had to be at least half of it!) so the FJSs maybe arent as heavy as you think...

i just got an 82 j20 to pull my GW with.

River Beast, GVWR stands for gross vehicle weight rating, the max that a vehicle should weigh fully loaded, alot of people mistake this for the actual vehicle weight. GAWR stands for gross axle weight rating.
Case in point a J20 has 3 levels of GVWR 6800, 7600, & 8400lb depending on what the person who ordered it wanted.

I appreciate the clarification on the plate...I still feel more comfortable knowing I have a more than capable tow rig for my FSJ.. I would have been leary of using a 1/2 ton... so I got the 3/4 ton. Mountains can put a serious strain on a tow rig.... I blew a practically new 350 to pieces on my 79 Bla*er just towing a 97 tacoma x-cab going x-country. The mountains definitely showed me the need for a better equipped tow rig
