Well now that I have 2 red stars next to my name I had better start messin around with my X-case and trany.
Please forgive my ignorance.
I found & connected a loose hose that shoulda put vac to the x-case. I now can get into 4wd hi and if I turn off the motor put into 4wd lo then start again. My question is this...

1. Should the front wheels chirp and lerch as I turn a tight radius on pavement??

2. Would a slightly fast idle keep the x-case from shifting smoothly from 4wd hi/lo??

3. Will the 4wd light on the dash light up with the ignition turned on and the motor off while in 4wd??

TIA

1: If you are in 4wd LOCK yes they will chirpo...do NOT use this on dry pavement. only us it on loose surfaces (dirt) or if its snowing or something.

2: The tranny should be in neutral when going from hi-lo, and if your engine is off..how will idle effect it??

3: for this I dont know..my jeep doesnt have any fancy smancy lights inside ;)

2: I do belive that I should be able to shift from hi to lo with out shuting off the motor. If i dont shut the motor down, it grinds hard. Is the fast idle keeping me from shifting smoothly??

BTW the xcase is a np229 select-trac(i think)

Guy I know with a NP208 has to shut it off to shift to lo range.

For me I just put the clutch in..so the engine is disconnected...never tried with just it being in neutral...

I have an 84 GW. Turn the motor off to get to and from low/high. There are suggestions about how to do it without turning off the motor, they never work for me. Grind, Grind.
In 4LOW, the tires will chirp. In 4 H, the tires *may* chirp, in any event there will be a slightly noticable "feel" of the tires grabbing as you turn a tight radius in 4H.

Stuka is right, do not run in 4L on pavement except for a real short test, and then only in a straight line. I do run that wasy in 4L about once a month for about half a block just to keep everything lubed and shifting, especiallt durring winter.

Be REAL CAREFULL about the 4 weel drive in the 84. I know, I recently shot a t-case because it was not completely shifting back into 2, and while the front axle disconnected, the t-case did not. Running a NP229 t-case with the t-case in 4, and the front axle un-locked is a quick way to explode the t-case. Look underneath at the vaccum motor while a friend shifts from 2 to 4 back to 2. You ought to see the vaccum motor pull the lever into 4, then push it back into 2. When in 2, the mode lever (the 4/2 lever) will line up with the range lever(High low lever).

BTW, the 84 with the vaccum disconect front axle HAS to be stopped to shift to 4. Later models, like 85+ did not. Same t-case, but different front axle. It is NOT shift on the fly.
