The vacuum actuated shift moter on my transfer case(np229) is not working and now I cant get my wag out of 4xhi.
Can I safely disconect the shift moter from the t-case and put it in 2xhi by hand untill i can fix the vac leak and/or replace the shift moter?
Has anyone ever replaced the vacuum actuated shift moter with an electric one or some kind of selinoid??
Theres gotta be something better than vacuum actuated!

I've heard that you can modify it to be cable actuated, but don't know fur shur. I plan on doing it before Ouray, but I have a list four yards long of things I have to do first! I'll look into it and see what's the easiest way!
Can't help on the repair but it hurts absolutely nothing to just leave it in 4WD HI. They were designed run in 4WD all the time.

thanks, Ive head that before.
how bad is my mpg gonna suffer while its in 4WD-HI?
anyone know if any other t-cases from other vehicles have an electric thingy or seliniod that does what the vacuum actuated shift motor does?

And contrary to popular belief, it won't affect your gas mileage, even a little bit.

I like that electro thing a ma jig idea....gives me an idea...but right now my vac is ok...I have to roll my beast @ 5 mph or so to get the xfer case to shift from H to L...not a good idea to do by hand...this may or may not be the same with your model...

Somebody posted a while ago about welding the VC in a 229? And also someone here had a cable-operated 229. Do a search and ya might find info on both.
Good luck!

Had a similar issue. NP229 vac actuated.
Blew it UP leaving Ouray because it would not completely come out of 4x4. HAd to tow Louise back to Denver. Thanks again, DON and all for their moral support and help!!
What was happening was, I would lever over to 2 from 4. The front axle would disconnect, but the T-case would not. So, the Viscous Coupler was going crazy. Now I did not really know this at the time in Ouray, I knew that there was an issue, but I did not think it through. The deal is to leave it completely in 4x4 until you know for sure that the range lever is shifting. You can also just move it by hand using a screwdriver as a lever. But driving full time 4 is no bigee. The vac. system is really not that hard to trace and fix.
