I'm not sure either. There is one in my area for sale also. Assuming it was probably a higher available trim level. Maybe 4 barrel, or a/c, etc.?

I believe an S model Cherokee was either base model or one step up from base. Nothing special really...All the models about the S model also sported the S Indian Head emblem.

The Cheroke S (model 17) is the uplevel cherokee over the base model (model 16). Not sure about everything it came with over the base model.

Sell me!

Or sport!

Or maybe they didn't know how to spell Chief and they thought it started with an "S"

It stands for Sesquipedalianism but they could not fit on the badge so they settled for S. your large word of the day.:D

it means sport...
it it mostly int package..
steering wheel, nuraled dash plate, covers one seat ( most are 2 tone cloth), should have come with wider waggy steel rims, stripe package on outside off jeep,

the reason the badge is on a chief is becasue the chiefs came with the sport package.
my 79 cherokee is a sport and that is about the only differance I can see from the no sport 78 and 79 that I parted out.

Sport

The Cherokee was a redesigned reintroduction of a two door body style, with a single fixed rear side window with an optional flip-out section. Previously, a two door version had been available in the Jeep Wagoneer line (1963–67), although this had the same pillar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillar_(car)) and window configuration as the four-door Wagoneer.
Based on the Wagoneer, the Cherokee was marketed as the "sporty" two-door variant of Jeep's station wagon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Station_wagon). The term "Sport Utility" appears for the first time in the 1974 Cherokee sales brochure.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Cherokee_(SJ)#cite_note-0) A four-door was not added to the lineup until 1977. Other than the base model, the trim levels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_model) of the Cherokee included the S (Sport), Chief, Golden Eagle, Limited, Classic, Sport, Pioneer, and Laredo.
