1985 Grand Wagoneer V8

My truck was a daily driver until unemployment 1 1/2 months ago. Last I checked it seemed to have oil. I started the day very low on gas. Fueled up with 16-17 gallons so I did have 3-4 gallons left. I've noticed the steering column seems to have a little vibration now.

I took her on the freeway noon time about 10 miles and a quick return. After exiting the freeway she didn't seem to want to go unless I really floored it. I pulled over a few blocks from home. I added a quart of oil. Seems to have enough. It added a little oil pressure on the gauge. The temperature gauge reads a little past the middle mark. I have low water in the coolant reserve. She seemed to move forward after she cooled a little. I am going to try to bring her home when traffic dies down and it is cooler. The left blinker went out, but came back on.

Facts:

-Went from low fuel to full tank.

-Temp. gauge read a little over middle

-oil level, accuracy unknown

-When putting into park getting transmission chatter, thought it was rebuilt a few years ago

-left blinker wasn't reading on dash, started reading again after temp came down a hair

- steering column making some noise now

Problem: Barely moving forward, when put back in park transmission chattering.
Seems to do better if cools a little bit.

Transfer case is in neutral or otherwise hosed up? They allow Wagoneers in LA?

the chattering is the park pawl clicking against the spinning gear. the output shaft is spinning but the power isn't getting to the wheels. you likely have a transfer case issue, maybe an unlocked hub with a 229 in 4wd mode.

Transmission fluid dropped. It got going home. Sounds like a toy motor when you spin it backwards when you hit the gas.

Problem: Transmission whining due to low fluid level.

Can anybody define difficulty repair level or repair estimate.

Fluid is to be measured at operating temp with trany in NEUTRAL after you have gone thru all the gears. Set parking brake, vehicle level..... Park against a tree or street light if you have not sure about the trany shifter.

After that check the Transfer Case fluid level.

As said, recheck TC selector and 4WD selector position.

As for repair, it can be a leaky trany pan, NSS or shift shaft selector.

I checked the mode rod handle which appeared to measure perfect from the floor up. It has been found to be very loose. I must have kicked it pulling my foot back coming to that last signal off the freeway.

I have no idea how to use that thing or what to do with it. Push, pull while in 1st or stationary?

It still seems to be clicking when it goes into park.

You're going to have to check your shifter linkage. It could have been bent at some point in time.

The same thing happened to my truck when I jumped it (by accident)
