I am pretty sure I will be moving to the Denver area for work. I am pretty sure there is emissions testing for colorado. I am wondering if it might be better to sell the jeep or try to put the air pump assembly back together. The small feed tubing from the exhaust has been crimped and the vacuum lines were removed from the air pump valves. They appear to still be in place on the fire wall, found them while working on the 2wd/4wd vac issues. I have no idea if any of it will work ...

thoughts?

It varies across the state. Maybe by county? I have only lived where there is no emissions testing. So try to get it registered in an emissions free zone.

Denver/Metro has emissions testing. That said, if you get the smog stuff hooked up again and you have a cat, you should pass easily.

It is by county. We don't do emissions in El Paso.

It's coming...

Larimer County (north of Denver) has E-testing again. Roller Dyno for most vehicles.

Depends on how much you like your Jeep.
I think your looking at a few hundred dollars for parts alone. Assuming you have a good air pump and check valve. You will need all new air tubes, and probably banjo bolts, (good luck getting them out).
Although, I seem to remember that back in the day if you spent "such and such" amount ($800 back then), and still couldnt get it to pass you could have emissions waived. Am I dreaming?
I also think that as an '83 it's a "collectors" car and gets the special plates, that may make a difference

They STOPPED the "rolling exemption" a few years back. :-(

Now, vehicles must be e-tested if they are 1975 or newer.

You CAN apply for the waiver, but I think it's a huge chunk of $$$ EACH YEAR that it must be e-tested. Really not worth it.

Find your air pump and put everything back on....

bummer ... I think it is a pulse system. There is no air pump on the front, at least I have not seen it in the service manual and parts book. I will have to look closely now with the move pending.

Thanks for the replys so far, I was afraid it could cost some heavy cash. :(

82 and newer are dyno, older ones are two speed idle, collector plates don't need an e-test but the vehicle must be older than 1975. And yes, it is moving to the northern front range area.

Air is a pump style. They will look for cat and air. If these are missing it is considered tampered, and is not elligible for a waiver. If tubes ard hoses are disconnected, pinched, or whatever, it all depends on the inspector. Sometimes they catch it, sometimes they don't.
