Well after 14 years of owning my J20 - last Thursday I officially became a member of the fsj club by becoming stranded on the side of the road with travel trailer in tow and family on our way for a weekend camping trip...... I was not happy.:mad:
The break down was my fault. I did not have the electrical wires tied up properly along the right cylinder bank and they vibrated down and burned a main electrical wire on the exhaust manifold. The good news is the fusible link worked like it was supposed to and saved the remainder of the electrical system. I took some electrical tape I had with me, tied up the wires, hooked the electrical wire up directly up to the solenoid and it got me 50 miles down the road to an auto parts house where I could get some connectors and an inline fuse for a temporary fix. The rest of the weekend went well.:)

Anyway - my question is where can I buy wire loom (convoluted tubing) that will hold up to the heat of the engine bay? Typically the stuff sold in autoparts houses is made of pvc and will melt when exposed to any heat.

It looks like the nylon is good up to 300 degrees - do you think this is enough? This wire loom will be about 3" from manifold but near the hot engine. I'm not sure 300 is enough.

Glad you were able to fix it on the road. Question...how do you fit a family in a J Truck?!

300 Degree nylon is way good, the loom should be up by the top of the valve covers, a good 6" from the exhaust manifold, the engine should only hit 220-230 max (hot shut down) for a short period.

For wires that could get close (starter wire, alt and oil sender wires) if you want to be anal, (I am) use a lenght of this http://order.waytekwire.com/products2/M37/380/400/600/1/Ultra%20High%20Temp%20Black%20Sleeving/Electrical%20Sleeving/Wire%20Coverings/
over the danger area.

Our VW has the fiberglass sleeving on various wires and hoses. Stuff lasts forever.

It is a tight fit in the truck - Right now it is only my wife, 16 month old daughter and myself and the family dog rides in the bed.
After this incident the wife was really putting the push on me about getting a more comfortable/reliable pickup for traveling......... Anything more than 2 hours at a stretch and the bench seat starts to get tough on your bottom side.
When I get a chance I'll post a few pics of the trip.

I don't think the VW stuff was the glass wrap, I think it was tar soaked cotton (?) (Some natural plant fiber soaked in tar like stuff)
