Well i've decided that i'll just build a 360 for my 77 cherokee in my engines class, i just have several questions.

First off, is there any particular years blocks were made better than others?

How big can you punch it out?

And are there any suggestions about how i can get more power out of it?

Max factory recommended overbore for the 360 is 0.045".

Power on a rebuild?
A performance Carb on a performance intake, like an Edelbrock.
TFI upgrade. (Use search engine on this sight.)
Dual exhasut if yer state allows it.
A revamped cooling system w/a high-volume water pump and aluminum (or good 4-core) radiator with heavy duty fan+clutch and enclosed shroud.
That's basic. I'll let the smart guys get into the details.

Just cruise through PAW's, JEG's, Summit's, Performance American catalogs and check out pistons, cams, valve trains, induction/exhaust systems and while you're doing that just keep chanting over and over the old hot rod adage "Speed costs money...how fast you wanna go?"

Also, check out some AMX web sites. The guys that build those things really know how to get a lot out of them. Here's another link to look at for some added performance.

Gotta check out the performance section. It's not specifically AMC but it's general purpose bolt on stuff.

PAWS...about $1100 dollars for a Master Re-build kit.

RPM, here is a quick rundown:

Edelbrock 4bbl performer intake
Edelbrock 600 cfm Performer carb
D.U.I. HEI Ignition
port/polish heads
Oil bypass kit
dogleg exhaust (stock on most)
lightened harmonic balancer
single exhaust, stock size (dual exhaust / headers are more for higher-mph / higher revving engines)
hi-flow waterpump
4 core radiator
double-roller timing chain
hi-pressure oil pump rebuild kit
roller rockers
lightened flywheel
underdrive pulleys
electric fan (saves a few HP)
PAW Cam (slightly better than the Summit Cam)

These are a few thoughts....

Also keep in mind this is going into a heavy truck, not a light car. Power should lean towards more torque at lower RPM, instead of high end HP. Stay conservative with the cam.

Paddy is right. With a 4,500 lb. road hog, and off-roading, torque is your best friend. You can build for higher torque and still get better hp, too.
