I opened my gasket kit for the engine and there is no valley pan. Do I just use the regular gasket in the kit or should I chase down a valley pan?
Thanks,
Greg

Yes you need the valley pan gasket. The Fel-Pro gasket number is P/N MS96011 it is around $18 at the local parts store.

I just got off the phone with the parts house. Why is this separate from the "master" rebuild gasket set?

Because they are idiots and AMC's are the minority. Sometimes I go to get parts and the guys behind the counter are like all you need is to use a Ford this or a Dodge that. I had an idiot the other day that gave me dodge 360 parts!!! Seriously though I have yet to get a rebuilt kit that came with the valley pan. I guess they think we will reuse the old one???

Porkchop is 100% right-on. Typical problem with the Fel-Pro paper gaskets (or anybody else for that matter) is that the thickness of the gasket does not allow the intake to seat firmly between the heads. Even if you get the bolt holes to line up (doubtful but possible) you risk leaking internally.
BTW, went to NAPA for an alternator and the guy insists (and I mean really insists) that I need one from a Dodge 360 since that block was a step-child (?) of the AMC 360. What do I mean by insists? He tells me that the book gives different part #'s but that's happened before... probably just a typo! Maybe Autozone is cherry picking the talent over at NAPA cause they handed me the right one without a problem. Some days....

If you buy a Detroit Gasket gasket set you get the pan, but with Fel Pro you don't and the Fel Pro costs more. I also have had Fel-Pro junk fail on certain motors where the Detroit doesn't. I have just never been impressed with Fel-pro, however some of thier stuff is needed for poorly designed motors like the GM Quad 4. A lot of Detroit stuff is OEM.

The Fel-Pro gasket is a metal gasket. I have been using them and have no problems with them. It comes with the rubber end gaskets and the black RTV sealant. Never heard of the Detroit brand. Where can I get them?

i know that with the edelbrock intake you just use the metal valley pan. no seperate intake gaskets. and you dont use the rubber end seals either. use a big bead of rtv. thats how i did mine. so far, so good.

Yup for some reason the rubber insists on slipping out. I also just us a think bead of silicon.

yep big bead of silicone on the ends.....let vehicle sit for 24 hours before starting.....also before starting make sure there is a 'bulge' of silicone coming out....I had a HUGE gap between intake and block and had to put a second layer of silicone to fill the hole.....

Maybe Fel-Pro has different kits for the AMC motors because mine came with thick "paper" style gaskets without even a metal insert? I did not use the rubber end seals either and the RTV has held up for 48K with no complaints.
Food for thought

Man, don't get me started on the "ain't in my computer don't know how to look in a book so we ain't got the part or they never made it for your vehicle pimple faced parts boys"
Called O'Reillys earlier this week and asked for a transfer case chain for my Wagoneer...he said, "is it a four wheel drive"
Arrrgggghhhhhhh, I hung up...
Remember, a sophmore or junior in high school who can get a job this year, was in first grade when the last GW rolled off the line.

I have the opposite problem--the guys at my local NAPA have all been there for 12-15 years, and they think they have the books memorized. After they give you the wrong part "off the top of their head" 2 or 3 times, you have to threaten them with physical violence before they'll look it up...
