Hello guys and gals. I am new to jeeping and I have myself a 1982 J10 (used to be long wheel base) Anyway I'll get to the modifications at a later date but for now I see to be having a transmission problem. Everytime I start the jeep and put it into gear, it lunges forward or backward (depending on the gear that I put it into) and then it dies. On few occassions I can actually get it into gear and it will sit and idle but when I attempt to press the accelorator pedal it lunges and dies again.

I have a newly rebuilt xfer case (208) and the transmission is a 727. I drove it for 3 hours on the highway to go on a jeep trip and the next morning when we went to wheel it started doing this so we trailered it and I had to ride with another driver all weekend. We brought it back to the garage and I can't seem to figure out the problem. Any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

The previous owner said somthing about that model truck comes with a lock up tourque converter?

Thanks again

It lunging when you first put it into gear makes me think the idle is set to high. Set it to 950 or so in neutral, and see if it still does it (that is if you idle is higher then this)

The TF727 used in FSJ's does not have a lock up converter, i dont know if whether one can be installed or not.

May be worth checking the kick down linkage, not sure which setup the TF727 uses, the Th400's had a vacuum setup.

How is the idle, these Jeeps have many vacuum line running all sorts of silly little items, and can be a weak link in the system.

Vacuum leaks can cause exactly what you describe, motor oil, transmission oil, gas and other assorted radiator drips and road grime attack the rubber hoses used to route vacuum to the transfer case, the modulator on the tranny, all sorts of stuff on the engine, any of these that came loose can cause problems.

We really need to have a much better understanding of the problem explained so that we can assist you. There are lots of folks who have probably had the exact symptoms that you are experiencing, we just need a little more input to pin it down.

If it ran fine to the trailhead and overnight had a problem, perhaps a vacuum line got knocked off in transit?

Humm my Jeep was doing the same thing till i discovered that the "Kickdown Linkage" as most like to call it was hooked up wrong. Does your rig have the 360 with a stock 2 barrel carb? This "Kickdown" is not really a kickdown but rather some fancy design that they came up with to regulate the pressure of the tranny fluid through various throttle positions. It is a wire hanger looking deal that is attached to the throttle of the carb. Theres a post in here somewhere that describes the whole thing in some detail. I'll post it in here soon as I find it. Idel will play a factor in this surging problem as well.

I'd say the problem is a vacuum-leak, which will cause the engine to die when it's cold and you put it into gear.

As for the lockup converter, yes, they had them in some FSJ trannies, but they were hydraulically controlled and shouldn't have the opportunity to engage simply when you put it into gear.

if you have fluid in the trany,

then park on a downhill... put in neutral.... let it roll then shif to D.... any better

does it do it with cold or hot engine ?

if cold only then i think that your carburetor accelerator diaphragm is gone.... the kickdown is for shifting gears.....
