Hey guys,

I was checking in my chiltons and it doesnt explain how to change a power steering pump and pulley.

Mine is leaking bad and wont hold any fluid.

What is the easiest way to change it out and do I need any special tools to do it?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thank you...

Nuts and bolts job, except for the pulley. Get the puller, buy, borrow, rent, whatever, just get the puller.

You may only need to replace the seals on the reservoir. This still requires removing the box, but IIRC, it doesn't require removing/installing the pulley.

Be VERY careful tightening the pressure hose fitting. I usually have trouble getting a flare wrench on it when the pump is sitting in the bracket, so I use a regular wrench. Just don't round off the corners!

Do you want a step by step writeup or just a general description?

If you dont have it already its about $75 bucks from Autozone resovoir and all. Its also a good time to check ur hoses. When u tension it there is a square hole on the bracket use a ratchet.

A step by step would be extremely helpful...

Consider getting the new pump with reservoir. Costs a little more but much easier to install. Autozone carries the pulley puller - they "loan" it out as in you buy it, use it, and return it.

OK, really, you just need to get a 9/16, 5/8 and 1/2 socket and just start taking stuff loose. You will need a couple of wrenches for the hose fittings on back. Depending on the year, they can be metric or standard. I normally loosen the bolts to make easier to get to the hoses.

Buy a puller for the pulley, take it off and then it makes it easy to take off the fornt bracket... I actually leave the front bracket off most of the time (I know, the engineers new what they were doing, but so far I have not had any issues). Just ask for the puller and it is self expanatory.

Couple of points... considering the age of your vehicle, PLEASE replace both hoses... the rubber inside is hard and flaky and will cause earlier demise of upgraded parts.

Flush system and hand prime new pump once everything is installed.

I know this is too brief, but it is not a techincally challenging install. You can DO it man!

If you get the cheap rebuild seal kit it will save quite a lot of $$. Here's a writeup I did on rebuilding my P/S pump. http://tc.wagoneer.net/sblog/static.php?page=ps_rebuild

Of the two hoses, the one with the attached hard line (pressure side) is easier to remove after you remove the two rear 5/8" nuts and the 9/16" (or whatever) bolts that hold the bracket attached to the pump onto the mounting bracket on the block.

You can 'borrow' the puller from Autozone (etc). It hooks into the groove on the snout of the pulley to push and pull.

Hope this helps

Michael

5 dollar o-ring kit,and very easy job. you can paint the cover while it's off.

great write up shimniok.

If your rig is '80+ the nuts on back of the pump will be 15mm. A 5/8" wrench will fit the hose fitting at the pump whether it's '79 down or '80+.

Thanks everyone for the advise!

Actually it is for a 79 chero...I put the fluid in...and the fluid goes out as fast as it goes in....no bueno. :(

I will look into the rebuild kit....I am all about saving the dollar where I can as long as I am not compromising quality.

Thanks again.....

Exactly where is the fluid coming out? Find that out first before you do anything. If the pump was working OK before the leak check the following:
If it's coming out at the pump shaft you need a new pump.
If it's coming out between the pump body and reservoir you just need a new seal there.
If it's coming out of a hose replace it.
If it's coming out of a fitting tighten it.
Maybe the reservoir is cracked somewhere or bent at the seal ?
Maybe the steering box is leaking?

You know what....I will check again.

I bought this rig with this problem and now that I am about to get this rig up and running...I wanted to take care of it.

Thank you...
