I have an '88 yj that I'm swapping '87 waggy dana 44 axles under, spring over. I want to find out if I can bolt an np-208 transfer case to my '99 ax-15 tranny. It would be replacing an np-231. This might be cheaper and easier than installing a slip-yoke eliminator kit on my t-case. Advance adapters weren't sure if the swap was a direct bolt-on job when I called them. Thanks for any info you guys might have.

Yes it will bolt on as far as bolt pattern and spline count. It may, however, not be "clocked" right. In other words it may sit slighty too high or too low and your driveshaft may hit the skid plate.
Personally I would definently go with the 208, I had to "clearance" the skid plate on my YJ a bit(just cut out a small hole under the bottom-most end of the t-case) and it fit well. The NP208 in my opinion is a better case than the 231. Plus you get rid of the vacuum switch on the t-case.
