View Full Version : Power Steering leak

I have a power steering leak on my '89 GW. I replaced the pump and resoivor. It still leaks. I think maybe the pitman arm seal is bad. Is it bad 2 replace and how can i tell if its that seal or the gear box worn out?? Thank in advance for ur help

If it is the pitman shaft seal... they are not too hard to replace IF THAT IS ALL YOU DO....
1. Take the pitman arm off
2. remove the 4 bolts holding the plate on top of the box which retains the adjustment screw (If your box it acting fine with no play.. don't mess with the adjustment screw)
3. Remove the cover,pitman shaft all in one shot.
4. the Pitman shaft seal is 2 SEALS...BACK TO BACK... remember the orientation of the lips of the seals upon removal AND the depth of them. (I'm telling you this because I can't remember the the direction of the lips on the seals)
5. clean up and reinstall new seals and reassemeble....
For the most part I have done this about 4 times... last time was about 5 years ago... all attempts were successful...
