Hi guys, I my wife just got me a 1991 jeep wagoneer for our 1st year wedding anyaversity.

Anyways its a ohio beast. Full of rust and issues.

I can weld, so the rust is not much worry. What got me perplexed is the fact I can driver her for 30min or so, and it just cuts out (starts to bog) and dies. I have driven it longer than 30min with no issue, but yesterday I started it up to check for the leaks, and it was only idealing for 4 min and it did the same thing, and it was a bich to get restarted. I had to hold the gas to the floor both times to get running again.

Dose this sound familar to anyone?

I know its hard to guess with out the truck present, but any thing will be of help.

Also the steering as lots of slop, it seems to be the jont, that is attacted to the steering box, but not the pitman arm, but the first long bar off the steering box. Which part is this? I don't want to order more than I need.

Thanks

Iron Mike

It could be the ignition module. Whack it (lightly!) with a hammer and see if it re-starts. Seriously.

Also, there have been a rash of distributor pickup failures recently, too.

Welcome to the insanity, and you'll find out real fast that....

Welcome to the land of empty pockets and unfinished projects...

So, your wife bought you a Jeep? I dont think I'd know how to take that. She is either wanting to keep the bank account down, or you out in the garage, ALOT....:D

Start with the basics and work your way back. Could be fuel filter, pump or even the sock in the tank. Just a matter of checking it out.
Congrats, and good luck...

Thanks, I will have to get some pic's but she is not pretty to most but me. I need a new right side ( finders, doors) But it was cheap and the wife likes it so hey....

Like I said, it will re start, with a 30 sec or so turning the key over and gas pettal to the floor.

I have no issues replace both parts, but is there one that sounds like a better option?

I got a felling I cant get an ingintion modual from Napa, right?

Also, the air pump is alrady disconnected, and looks in said shape. Are there any potential issues if I completly remove the air pump set up?

She got it for me becouse I have been in the Army for 13year now, and well lets just say, I have always had the $$ for my toys. Fully restored 1968 5.7L Hemi Dodge Charger, with 5 speed od, My 2007 Dodge Charger with a 426 Stroker, with a nice Harrop Roots supercharger (ran 10.03 1/4mile got black listed for no roll cage) and my other toys.

But since getting mairred, and we just moved to ohio, $$$ is short and she dosen't want me to feel like I cant have the things I want just becouse she hasn't found a job yet. :banghead:

Im trying to make this my sweet lifted daly driver, as my 2007 charger is getting around 8 miles to the gallon right now.

First off, welcome to the forum, from S.E.MI....home of the Woodward Dream Cruise! Now,you'll want to check the left frame rail,by the gas tank for rust, that is the problem area on rust belt rigs.....Now,open the LR door, fold the rear seat forward, pull the carpet back,&locate the round cover on the floorpan with 3 rivets. Now,drill 2 of the 3 rivets out,and swivel the cover over. You will now see the sending unit.Blow out all the dust&dirt&check the sending unit&elbows for rust holes. Now you need to unscrew the big plastic nut,to remove the sending unit, either giant channelocks or tap it off with a hammer&punch.I made a spanner out of a piece of 3.5" exhaust pipe, with 6 notches in it.Now replace the filter sock, new one are available at BJ's off road.I think either you have a hole in the elbow on the unit, sucking air,or the filter sock is collapsing.

I would go ahead and get a new ignition module. It's one of those parts that's nice to have around. Yes, you can get it new at a parts store. These rigs used a bunch of common Chevy and Ford parts.

You could also look into replacing the dist. and ignition module with an HEI dist. It's a nice way to get rid of a couple of problem areas.

Thanks, what are some of the igniton problem areas? Is there a HEI dist kit, sold by a vendor on this forms, or a parts list?

ricbee: Thanks, I will check it out this weekend.

I know this baby is rusty, I thought my 68 charger was bad. the rear passger floors, and some of the drivers floors are gone! :banghead:

This is rust next to the tank, I think I saw a kit some where to repair that area, is there a company you guys recomend?

Thanks Mike

Bj's offroad is our largest vendor.. I don't remember if they have patch panels/skid plates though. Depends on what is rusted, i suppose.

Welcome to the Madness.
You are part of a very exclusive sub-group only 1560 Grand Wagoneers were made in 1991.
:worthless:

Now post up some pics

We like pics of ALL FSJ's, not just the so-called "pretty" ones.

As mentioned, an aftermarket ignition module is available.

Some people like the HEI, but you have to get one from a reputable manufacturer. The generic ebay ones are apparently junk.

BJ's Offroad sells the frame rail repair kit, AFAIK. It's made by Auto Rust Technicians.

BJ's Offroad is my favorite FSJ parts seller. Keep in mind that they are a semi-full-time business and sometimes communication is longer than a 1 day turnaround.

Welcome from a fellow service member and buckeye. If you need help yell and I'll come from an hour west of you to help ya out. I have a 77 wagoneer that had similar issues. I replaced my cap, rotor, points, wires plugs and fuel filter and it did wonders for my jeep. The part total was about $200.00. Hit me up anytime you want.

Good luck,

I believe BJ's has an HEI. You can also look at Bulltear, they may have one. For a little more money you can get one from DUI also. Summit and other places have those. You also will have to replace your wires at the same time.

You should think of Hemi for the Jeep :). Welcome!!

It will be intill the weekend before pics, sorry,

DerekTJeepYou should think of Hemi for the Jeep :). Welcome!!

That is already what I was thinking! I don't want to piss anyone one off, but the 5.7 hemi's are amazing motors! I spent big money into my 360 sb mopar motor (motor/head rebuild slight porting) and it only dynoed 300hp to the wheels.:banghead:

I put the 5.7 that came in my 2007 charger in the 68, added a small reverse split cam, all eles stock, and dyno 380 HP to the wheels, and the motor was about 70-100pounds lighter with serp belt dirve. I was also getting a little over 20mpg with a dyno tune, and the 5 speed.

The only issue with the 5.7 hemi is lack of distrubutor, you have to use a MSD box and wire harness, and factory coils, ($500 or So)

2nd big issue is, Correct me if Im wrong,

But the 727 in the wagoneer have a AMG bolt pattern? Not a dodge bolt pattern? Is there a adapter plate, or a what to take the front houseing off the trans and replace it with a mopar peace?

So is there a write up on how to remove the smog parts off this motor? The owner before me already started and tried to crimp the small exsaust tubes off the manafolds.

Thanks Iron Mike

Welcome from the PRK! Thank you for your service to our country. Don't be shy about pics, we have all seen rust before  ... Factory service manual is a must have. You will need it for electrical and emissions diagrams. FSJs aren't really known for being all that reliable as a DD, nor for their fuel efficiency. My house has better aerodynamics.

Welcome from NJ!

Check the steering shaft u-joint for play. The steering shaft goes from the column at the firewall to the rag joint on the box. It incorporates a u-joint (just below the master cylinder) that is prone to wearing out. If that is the case, you'll need a whole new shaft as this joint is non-replaceable. Contact a company called Borgeson for the shaft. Flaming River may have something by now too. Pricey, but thats about the only option unless you can weld in a new joint or find a good used one.

Pics of the '68 Charger please. We don't need anymore pics of Wags around here. :p

As far as the HEI goes, new wires and a longer belt are in order. power steering pump has a tendency to get in the way. Hard to tell for sure about your particular model year as...........

WE DONT HAVE PICS YET?

Oh, and welcome
