Ive got a 80 Wag with 44 front 20 rear. 3.54 gears. I want to run about 4.10s or so.
I will have a Powertrax NoSlip in the rear and some sort of Limited slip in the front. I plan on 32" or 33" tires with a overdrive auto.
I believe the 44 has the smaller carrier and wont take the 4.10s, but the 20 can take them? What do I need to do to make this work, replace the front 44 with one with a carrier that will work with those high gears.
Anyone know what years have 44s that you could get 4.10s in (or 4.11s or what ever they had).
If its all a real pain, how bad do you think the 3.54s will be with 350 horse and 32"s?
Ive got 3.90s in my Dakota 4x4 and I wish I had 4.10s and I run 32s on it too...

Im no expert on this, but I know that you need a bigger carrier to fit the 4.10's, the lowest gears you can fit on the 3.54 carrier is a 3.73. Im not sure what years came with 4.10 gear ratio.
Your 350 has a bunch more power than mine, and I turn the 33's with 3.54 gear pretty well, so I would think you would be just fine with 32's and 3.54's

If you're "sure" you now have 3.54 gears you'll just need to replace the D44 carrier to install 4.10's, the M20 carrier will work from 3.07 and up(numerically).
Stock gearing was either 2.73 or optional 3.31's in 1980-91 so if you have 3.54's already they've been swapped in.

I think if you find a 70's Wagoneer with a 258 and manual trans you can get the 4.09 gears. I just bought a '76 Wag with the 258 and the 3-speed manual and it has D44s with 4.09 gears.

Okay, so what about me? 76 Waggie, Auto Tranny, D44 front/rear... What gears do you think I have? And what gears would be good for me? I'd like to go higher up... (lower, you know...)

you should have 3.54's or 3.31's

Ramjet, have you considered maybe even 4.56? With the OD, if you crunch the numbers, I think you'll find it pretty acceptable even at highway speeds with 33's. Also, the D44 carriers are pretty inexpensive, that should be way down the problem list.

Nah...not in an 80 Wag Todd. 2.73's and 3.31's were the only gears avail in an 80. Be it a Wag/Chero or J-10. 3.54's weren't even offered as options in any 1980 rig. Only other ratio was 3.73's but only in the J-20 trucks and those were standard gears for the J-20. That's according to the factory 80 TSM...<shrug>?

Joe,
My 80 wag has 3.54s!?!?!
So, as I am pretty axle illiterate. Can I swap in the bigger size carrier in the 44 and then use a 4.09 or 4.56 gears? Do I need to do the same on the 20? Where can I get and how much $ are the new carriers?
Thanks
You'll need a new carrier for the front D44 but the one in the M20 will take 4.10 gears.
I haven't priced them in a long time but carriers new should be about $60-$75 or so w/o spiders and $125-$150 w/new spider gears. Shop around at Randy's Ring and Pinion, Reider Racing, West Coast Differentials etc. There's lotsa gear vendors out there smile.gif Most have web sites so just plug a name into Google or your favorite search engine.

Joe,
I should have elaborated better... that post was for JASONTHOMASFRANCE's question:"Okay, so what about me? 76 Waggie, Auto Tranny, D44 front/rear"

Todd,
Standard Wag gears(assuming you have the 360) w/AT would be 3.07's in '76 or optional 3.54's.
That's from the factory 76 TSM.
