I took my motorcraft carb off yesterday and am ready to replace. I need opinions on a replacement. Should I go with the Holley 80457s or the Edelbrock 1406. I have been told the Edelbrock runs rich and is not adjuster friendly. The cost is about the same, a little over $200 for new.

I know this is all just preference but would like a little feedback before I take the plunge!

Any Holley's out there??

edelbrocks really arent' that hard to tune, its just that most of the tuning adjustments are interal instead of external like the holleys - and that all depends on what you're trying to adjust I've used a couple of edelbrocks that ran like a champ right out of the box. holleys used to have a real problem with their fuel bowls leaking but have gotten better - you're right it is a matter of preference because any carb can be made to perform right - personally i would use the edelbrock

If you are ever going to take it off road do not buy the Edelbrock. Michael who is a member of the forum can tell you how bad that carb floods out on any incline or off camber situation. I would go with the new holley truck avenger. I am thinking about purchasing one my self. I read an article on the first trail test and they said that they could not get it to even sputter. They also said that is was fantastic on road.

Yes! Two replies, two different opinions. Well, we knew that would happen. Personally I have received more positive feedback on the Holley.

So what is the "new Holley truck avenger" model #? Would like to be able to price one that fits my 360 4bbl.

Thanks!

I run hollys offroad and as long as you get the single feed vac secondary models like the truck avenger they work great. In fact the Truck Avenger is all the stuff I do to a used 4160 to make them ready for my rigs. I should sue them :D The new annular boosters should make them even better than the older 4160's. I am not a big fan of the Carter AFB which is what an Edelbrock carb is as you can not just go to any parts store or your buddies parts shed to get parts should something happen.
As far as the bowls leaking on Holleys where did that come from? If you use good quality gaskets there is not a problem, although it maybe if you use cheap rebuild kits (they s*ck).

Don't know for sure but the parts guy at Kragen said if you go with the avenger you do not get the full benefit without getting a new manifold.

Since I don't want to increase my fuel bill, I'll probably stick with the 80457s. I can get it for $218 vs $349 for the avenger.

The Truck Avenger is available in 570,670,770,870, and 950 cfm. The 670 cfm is p/n 0-80670. The Summit cat. # is hly-0-80670....price is like $389.00 :(

Here is the link to Holley's page:

Good point, however, if you get the Edelbrock and the off-road needle (the needle is cheap) you'll have the best of both worlds. Edelbrock reliability, easy tunedness (I like making up words), and off-camber/incline performance.

Anybody know if Holley will make available the special truck avenger parts to convert the 1850 (4160 series) carbs? Be nice that I already have one.

You don't need any special parts. All you need is the off-road needle kit, the trick kit, to fine tune the jets, and to make your own slosh tube, with fuel grade hose. Just build the slosh tube like the little pictures of the truck avenger, and you've saved your self a tidy chunk of change.

I guess I'll weigh in too. I had a brand new 1406 on a Performer intake and opted for a $30 Ebay Holley 4160 Special. It fired right up when gas hit it and hasn't given me a bit of trouble on or off road. The 1406 on the other hand flooded with me on a regular basis and seemed to change the way it ran drastically with the humidity and temp. It was probably 90% operator error but the Holley has just been alot more reliable and versatile for me.

OOPS, Not so fast....

All this talk of my new carb and I never considered the emission controls. According to the Holley web site, the 80457 is one with emission standards. Apparently, not enough for CA (according to my local shade tree mechanic.)

I did as I said, bought the 80457 brought it home and found it did not have enough vacuum lines for what I had under the hood and the glaring omission (not emission) was not having a port to connect the hose that goes to the charcoal cannister.

Does this mean I need to find a different model?? I emailed Holley but do not expect a response until at least Monday. If anyone out there (who is out here - in CA that is) knows about this stuff I would appreciate some advice.

BTW, I mentioned in earlier post that Kragen matched my online price, well they did better. They match plus 5%. Not too shabby.

Thanks for all the imput, unfortunately I could use a little more.

Doh!!
I pulled off an Edelbrock and put on a Holley. Even after adjusting timing and several rebuilds the Edelbrook still left big black spots in the yard. No probs with the Holly yet. This is just a palin jane holley not the avenger, which sounds like what I will put on the '74 Waggy.

We have a Edelbrock on ours. A bit of tuning and off road needle and seat. No problems with it at all. It runs good bouncing or off camber.

Its all what you get used to, both will perform as well. I have run both over the years. No real issues with either. I have decided to run the Edelbrock though that is what I would buy as a choice. Have new performer setup on my Cherokee now. Does a Good Job!! ;)

It All Works!

Don't know if anyone cares a whole lot but I just did not have the right help yesterday. Today my new Holley in bolted on and everything is hooked up.

I have only had this Cherokee a week and it would hardly ever start. I had to put starter fluid in most of the time. Thursday it would not start at all so I figured it was time to invest in the new carb.

Now, one turn and she fires right up! It's the prettiest music I have ever heard!!

Many thanks for all the imput. Maybe I can meet some of you guys one day when you have a CA rally.

On to the next projects, 1) Rear window, 2) Cracked manifolds. I'll have to check in next week on the exhaust manifolds for some input on smog stuff.

Thanks again to all!

John

All carbs can be rigged to work correctly. But, if you are looking for the ultimate all around carb then look no farther the the q-jet. You could be upside down and the thing will still run.

Is the recently removed Motorcraft a 4-barrel? I had my 4100 rebuilt and it ran fantastic! Later I replaced it with a brand-new Carter AFB from a junk Javelin. I expected a major improvement, but it ran the same. Nothing wrong with the AFB, I was just real impressed with the capability of the Motorcraft.

There is a carb shop in Jacksonville FL that sells rebuilt Edelbrocks for $150-175 with a lifetime warranty. If interested, e-mail me off the forum and I will get you the number. (fcamc@juno.com)

As Bchesley stated....

I am running the edelbrock on mine. In my past life I have always run holleys on my race cars and such. I really like the carb on the street. It was a much needed improvement.

But on the trails on inclines and off camber it stinks....out of the box. I have not put on the off road needle that sitting bull stated, it is only $8.95. It should do the trick....because what is does is actually keep the float from closing due to the angle.... so in theory it should be the quick fix to bad on the trails...

As far as tunning. This the easiest carb I have tunned. I took it out of the box. Put her on. I had it running and tunned in about an hour.... After the intake install (3hrs) anyway.

Your choice..... I still personally am a holley fan!!!
