Hey fellas, I'm new to the site thanks to a member here who was on a Chevy truck site.

I will be buying a 1979 Cherokee Golden Eagle with 72,000 miles and a bad tranny.

My question is actually about the motors for these trucks.
Is the 401 the same as the 360??
What I mean is will it be a direct bolt in??

This truck is a 360 and I want to build a 401 in the near future.:D

The truck is completely stock and I will probably keep it that way but knowing me this will NOT be my last Jeep. I tend to collect trucks and I have had 2 old M38A1s when I lived in Minnesota. My wifes Great uncle has 17 old Military Jeeps and he is 92 yo. He was the Jeep/Tank Mechanic at Fort Snelling during WW2. He got me into Jeeps over 20 years ago. I have always loved them even as teenager when my sister bought an AWESOME 79 Cherokee Chief S. When I learned to drive she let me drive it all over the cities.:drivin:

So, here I am. Another 4x4 NUT!!!!!:fsj:

Then you have been witness to OJD. LOL -- welcome to the insanity. IIRC, they will bolt in, but I'm no pro with the v8's. I have my 258 that I can't even figure out.. LOL

Welcome to the Insanity, have fun :D

BTW, It will not stop at the engine, if you get the mod bug, you will succumb to it. lol

Welcome!

Will the Jeep move at all? If not make sure the transfer case is not in neutral. Quite a few people have bought FSJ's over the years with a bad transmission and it turns out the transfer was in neutral.

I will be checking on it when I go get it. It is in another state. :fsj:

Thanks for the heads up.

Definately a direct bolt in. I did the opposite. I had a rebuilt 360 that I stuck in my 78 to replace the old worn 401.

In case your wondering why I went with a 360 instead of a 401. I had a 76 that was my new project and the first thing I did was yank the 360 out and sent it off to be rebuilt. After starting work on the 76 frame and body I noticed it had a load of cancer. So I purchased a replacement 78 wag which had a 401 in it. Unfortunatly I had already put way to much money in the 360.

Welcome from SW CO

360/401 swaps are pretty much bolt in... Some differences do come up though. The 360 exhaust manifold bolts are sometimes different sizes from a 401 depending on when it was manufactured. There is also occasional difference in the bolt size the alternator hangs on. The tranny flexplate for 360 and 401 is different because the engines are externally balanced and require different balance between 360 & 401. The accessory pulleys on the front are slightly different between 401s that used a 3 bolt harmonic balancer (71-75) and a 4 bolt (76-78). Little things like that...
