I broke the glass out of my '81 Cherokee last year and now that it is cold, my weekend driver is seeing less action. I have a new window coming in the mail and I know the window motor works because I hooked it up to a battery. I don't know which wires hook up from the motor to the switch on the back of my tailgate. I am missing the switch by my steering wheel, there's just a hole. Is there anyway to hook up the window motor and only use the switch in the tailgate? What color are the wires too? Sorry for so many questions, I"m not to experienced with wiring.

I did pretty much this same thing and have no problem with it so far. Unfortuneatly, I can't remember the exact connections and disconnections I made and they're all under the gear assembly. You'll have to take that out to get to the switch. For what it's worth I ran new wires from the battery back to the tailgate. I could see that a tan w/black strip, a brown w/ white strip and a red w/ yellow strip are hanging free so I at least cut thoughs wires. I didn't cut the wires going to the motor, only the to the switch. The motor doesn't have a wire going to ground. The switch reverses the polarity to the motor depending on whether the windows going up or down. I just used wire nuts for making the new connections, but, of course, you could use what ever you want.

Sorry I couldn't give you more info.

Well, you'll either need to replace the dash switch, or run the brown and tan wires at that connector to ground, in order for the tailgate switch to raise and lower the window, since the circuit grounds through that switch (and both wires are normally grounded at that switch when it is at rest).

Any wiring diagram from a '79-up FSJ will give you an idea of how the wiring should be. Search the archives, and you should be able to turn up a number of links for diagrams.
