My 89GW seems to have come with every option available EXCEPT for a Tach. I bought a smaller AutoMeter and thought I'd hose clamp it to the steering column until I realized ther would be that shifting thing to consider. Duh. Anyway seems like my only good choice is on the floor on top the tranny hump near the dash. Anyone have any ideas.

a friend of mine mounted his to the steering column and it worked out fine......just make sure you mount it with the truck in "Drive"

one thing about the steering mount, it will move when you shift the jeep...

I have a 2.5" tach on my steering collumn. It has GREAT back lighting. hooked it up to my dimmer, so I can dim it with the rest of my guages. I have a T18a, so I dont shift on my steering collumn. I have the tach off to the passenger side, so I can see my regular guage cluster just fine. nice thing about a collumn tach, is you dont have to drill holes in your dash or anything. The dash in my 75 is perfect, and I did NOT want to wreck it at all.

I don't know about the column thing just due to shifting. Maybe it's just no big deal. I definitely don't want it on the top of the dash, so i'm still leaning toward the floor hump near the dash vents.

Side note. Since I've it the rig for 1 month I have done a complete tune, fixed / replaced a lot of vacuum lines. Had completely new springs made and put on new shocks, theres a bunch more but anyway, just took it on the first big trip.

Towing a cataraft and gear and 4 people over two mountain passes, never a loss for power and averaged 11 mpg. (one stretch was 13)

When I was pulling out of the canyon (1,800 ft. straight up gravel switchbacks) I was starting to overheat pretty good. just couldn't get airflow over the radiator. Took it just up to the red by the time I got out, and as soon I was up and could get speed it dropped to 180 - 200. Does this do any real damage? It never got above 200 on highway mountain passes.

not the best thing for the engine, but should be ok for short periods of time. might want to change the oil and filter. and check your fan clutch. it might be in low speed mode all the time.
