It looks like I've got to replace the oil pan on my J20. It's rusted to the point that there is a pin-hole where oil is leaking out. Also A few may remember I was looking for a dipstick. Well I bought one through a mopar dealer, then discovered the tube was rusted(gone) down along the block into the pan. So I've got another coming(same dealer).
So I'm going to replace/repair the pan and while I'm in there was going to do a rear main seal.
Should I bother to try and have the pan (new over $100) welded/repaired or just replace it? Also is there anything else I should be replacing... oil pump, screen, etc?
Thanks

In light of the pan already springing one leak, I'd replace it. If one's already there, how many more are waiting to show?
Since you've already decided to swap the rear main seal, I won't suggest it, but I will suggest that you give everything you can look at a good, thorough, going over. Also, wear goggles, cause you won't get the engine clean/dry enough not to drip on you!! ;)
The advice above is good, but...
if the leak in the pan is the ONLY one (caused by a puncture not rust) and if you REALLY want to, I guarantee you that you can fix it with a JB Weld type stuff. I fixed a magnesium crankcase once with it and it held solid. Just make sure to get ALL the grease/oil off the surfaces first.
As far as the rear main seal, just yesterday Riverbeast said something about a special tool that turns the job from a PITA to an easily accomplishable task.

Thanks,
Yeah I got that I've done a few seals in my day.
I was thinking about that JB weld stuff but I'm going to wait to see how bad it is once I get it off.

yeah, I shoulda know seeing as you are listed as a "greasemonkey"
What's it take to become a greasemonkey anyhoo?

JBweld i think defys a few laws of physics somewheres.....that stuff is POTENT.
that SteelPutty stuff that they sell at Discount is a close second.
but if your oilpan is that rusted, might as well just get a new one. it ain't good when that rust flakes off on the inside and works its way into bearings and such.....unless you're seriously strapped for cash....then yeah, JBweld away!

When you have the pan off, evaluate the amount of sludge in the bottom. If there is a lot, take off the oil pump pickup and clean it good! If it is really dirty, pull the oil pump and check it out, do what is necessary to have good oil flow.

Hey GEMOBX you know, there is actually very minor rust on the rest of the truck. Repaired it all and Durabaked the truck in a week. I only had to install one small patch panel on the cab floor.
Maybe they used that Japanese steel for the oil pan :D
