Turn around when you hear a funny noise....

After doing some work on Gonzo I took it for a test spin, went south from my house first, turned around and decided to go past up a side road to turn around, just past my place I heard PSSTTTTTTT then it stoped.
I thought - wheel bearing - u-joint??? It didn't last long so I kept going. Not long after again PSSSTTTTTTSSSTTT and it stopped. This time I was able to lock in - driver side rear side, and I thought hmmmm that tire had a slow leak and I shot seal N air in it so maybe... then a big poof and the rear end sagged. Yeap - flat tire - now all 4 tires are used ones I had that are about bald and so weather checked I can about see the air in them. Of course no spare (on my list to grab next trip to the salvage yard). I turned around thinking I could limp back to the house, tire is already junk, but after 50 feet the bead let go and I heard the rim on the gravel.

At least I was actually at a place on my road that I could pull off and not drop down an embankment. I was only just over 1/2 mile from my house so I walked home, and left poor Gonzo sitting it the weeds overnight, since it was already getting late, and starting to rain.

I think I have a solution, since I am planning on a lift and bigger tires over the winter I don't want to put new tires on now, but I was just looking at my wife's Grand Cherokee, the tires on it are just under 1/4 tread and I figured by winter it would need some new meats, so I will put a new set on it now and put those used ones on Gonzo to get me by until it goes "under the knife".

Could have been a lot worse, but had I turned around when I first heard the noise I probably would have at least been able to pull into my yard if not make it back to the shed....oh well, all part of owning an FSJ.

just be sure that the rims on the grand aren't 16". i made that mistake trying to give a buddy some of my used tires to put on his grand and we had to find him some 15" rims.:fsj:

Well since were tellin' road test stories...
I finished my exhaust manifold-turn-valve cover-turn-brake booster-turn dipstick tube, etc, etc work and decided to make a short run to the beer store for some refreshments. I drove proudly up to the store with the AC on high fan and shut the old girl down. When I jumped out, I smelled fuel. Knowing my fuel system so well I immediately looked back were the fuel pump is mounted and discovered a sizable puddle of fuel, and it was dripping off the tank and frame. I completed my mission and fired her back up and took off for the house trying to burn as much fuel as I could by normal means. I had to stop to open the gate at which time I took another glance, to discover fuel pouring out from somewhere. I drove up the drive and rammed it into the garage and shut it down without putting it in park. After the puddle dried up, I inspected and found the return line had disconnected itself at one end. I started out with a half a tank. I went 7 miles and consumed approx. 7 gallons. Gotta love 'em.
