It seems that my wagoneer (TH400) has been shifting harder and at higher than normal speeds. hits second at 20-25 mph instead of 15, and hits 3rd at 35-40 mph instead of 30.
The tranny is full of fluid. I did a filter/pan gasket service on it and found alot of grey/silver stuff in the pan. This tranny was supposedly rebuild recently.
The trouble seemed to have started after I played around with the timing. I got it back to where I think it should be, but it still shifts late/harsh. I also think the carb is going south. So, is it just a tranny problem that needs another rebuild, or might it be an engine tuning problem that is manifested in transmission shift quality?

Check the vacuum line going to the moderator, and the moderator itself. I got $500 off the price of my Wag because the vacuum line was burnt in two, and the guy thought the tranny was dying.

Also check the spring on the carb to tranny shift rod. If the spring is weak or the linkage is sticky the tranny will hold first for a really long time.

yes, check that vacuum line and see if there's any ATF in it. If there is, your modulator is bad. Check and see if that line has vacuum too smile.gif
