View Full Version : 63" Chevy springs, 4-doors and wide-trac flares, Oh my.
Anybody got such a combination?
I think River Beast was like that but I could not search and find any threads with 63" Chevy springs.
I am just thinking/wondering how difficult it would be and would it be worth the effort?
Baically, I want to end up with 4-doors and wide-trac flares all around.
If I do this I plan on running large tires (38"+) with minimal lift. Many years ago I ran a wide-trac Cherokee with approx. 7" suspension lift and 38's with good results, kind of looking to replicate that but with 4-doors.
I remember reading something about the 63" springs moving the rear end back about 4" is that true or is it more? If I use the 63" springs do I end up with much if any lift?
Does moving the rear axle back that far make getting the wide-trac flares on a 4-door body a lot easier?
Thanks,
baja

If you run a 2" spring up front with SOA, and the Chevy 63" in the rear in combination with a shackle flip..your Jeep will sit about even all around.
Moving the axle back via Chevy springs will surely help get those W/T flares on with less modification to the Rear Door.
For me it was about 6" back and about 2" of lift with the big overload removed.

There may be variations of the 63's I am not aware of.
Tad,
Are you running a shackle reversal in the rear?
Have you noticed any axle/spring rap with that overload leaf removed?
Youngjeeper,
How much lift did that get you?
In that link, am I to understand that with the 63" Chevy springs and a rear shackle flip, I can expect to see about 2" of lift, over stock Waggy rear springs?
Thanks guys.

I have not done it..yet. But yes, assuming you have the Shackle Flip setup you will see a 2-2.5" increase in height using the Chevy 63" springs vs. Stock Jeep springs.

tad, how did you manage to level your wag back out? also, would i be able to do the 63 inch chevy springs with your brackets? stock driveshaft work?

Another question...Is inboarding necessary with the 63 inch Chevy Springs?

Shackle flip, yes.
They are long and only 3 leaves on the ones I have (with overload removed), so you can see the wrap when it's loaded up under torque, but I have not killed them yet and they seem to maintain their shape very well. I'm sure in a high HP/constant abuse situation some type of anti-wrap bar would be desirable.

Originally I was running my old 42" long re-arched (4" lift) front spring that were pretty sagged. That matched up for about the first two years real well. Once the SOA had sagged them (I bent a few main springs along the way too) to where they were almost flat I ran the long BJ's shackles. Since my pinion is rotated up 2* that hurt my caster.
Back in June I cut off all the old style front hangers and relocated new ones I made for the 74-91 longer front springs. I'm now running a set of front 74-91 wag/chero springs with a secondary main spring (cut out of another pack), the bottom springs from the packs are removed and I have gone back to the stock shackles.
That matches up very well also.

You can run them with the standard SF kit by flipping the rear brackets from the left to the right sides and pushing them back a little (almost to the rear crossmember). That's how this one was done.

what if i were to use the stock front spring mounts and your rear mounts? ive hear this is a possible solution to get around the huge lift...

If you are talking about doing that with the GM 63" springs I'm sure it would work. It would still push the axle back and you would have to reposition your perches on the axle tube to maintain a good pinion angle.
Just how far it would actually move back, the perch position, and where the hanger winds up would need to be figured out on site.
