a cam and lifter for my new engine. was ordering the remaining parts to put my 258 back together and couldn't decide on a cam. I was thinking the comp camps 68-231-4 or crane's #753901. its a 76 block, bored 0.040 over, going back together with the stock head for now(4.0 head conversion and MPI planned in the future). thinking maybe the crane #750501 might be a better better suited for what I want but not sure. I dont really know anything about cam shafts and when I do read about them it usually come across as giberish to me

I would strongly recommend you stick with a stock cam for that motor...or one that's very close to stock. Unless you raise you compression ratio (how much depends on your cam profile) you're going to drastically affect the drivability of your 258. It'll run much better and make more torque and get better gas mileage with a stock cam. I'd say any cam with an advertised duration of 260 degrees or more will cause your engine to fall on it's face. That's a true 260 or more...not 260 @ .050" lift. I've learned this the hard way. When in doubt, stick with a stock cam.

Yah after more research I decided agains't that cam. im still trying to figure out what I want though as I also don't want to pay $250 for a cam(cheapest crane cam I can get around here and thats with a good discount).

even with a 4.0 head swap bringing the CR up would you still recomend a stock cam? what about comp cams smaller cams available for the 258 like the 68-115-4 and 68-200-4?
whats the cons of having an old cam re-groung?
