78 Cherokee

I have a 78 Cherokee, i bought it for $150. Overhauled the engine and I have a mean machine now. Got some things on it to boost the performance, ripped all the smog crap off...etc. I recently drove it from NC to Key West FL where I live now, about halfway, the good old AC quit. Everything still works, compressor and all. It just lost the freon. I can hear it coming out in the dash. I know i have to get in there and fix it, how well do those ancient compressors work with 134 though?

Mine still has r12, but I know there are some on here who have done the coversion with moderate success.
Also, does the system have a low press cut out switch? If it does, the compressor shouldnt be coming on unless it has a charge.
