I would recomend staying with the factory manifolds. I had Hedman headers on my othe Wagoneer, and they always leaked, and I saw 0 horsepower increase. If money were no object, and you had to have some, get Doug Thorley.

Hey Celz,I had headman headers, got them through NAPA at the time.don't remember what I paid, but they were pretty cheep. There's 2 styles, inside frame and outside frame. You want the inside style. With any header I use high temp. RTV on both sides of the gasket and locktite on the bolts and the soft metal type collector gaskets and have had good results.I think you can get them through Summit also. Marc

Those "dead soft" copper exhaust gaskets are really sweet. A little spendy, but worth the money. They're reusable and the don't leak at all if you have good, flat header flanges. I've got 'em on my '67 tempest and never had a leak.
One good tip regarding headers: if you do have a leak where they mount to the head, fix it right away. Waiting and running it like that will eventually warp the flange and it will never seal up right after that. I used to have headers on an old j-truck... I think they were heddman and IIRC the application was for CJ. They went inside the framerails. Sold that setup, I like exhaust manifolds unless you need headers for hi rpm Horsepower. The down side, is they create lots of heat and that makes lots of problems you never thought of... such as starter heat soak, not enough cool air to the carb, cooked plug wires, etc.
Those hi tech coatings like jet-hot are really nice to keep the heat down, but they cost $$$. In my opinion, worth it, however.

Doug Thorley... Here they are about 400 bucks... Not cheap, but good stuff. Thinking about getting them for my jeep.

I'm going to stick with the manifolds, because even last year in this Mississippi heat of the summer things were getting hot under the hood, I don't need any added heat. Lastly, what do ya'll think about exhaust, I want dual, but I hear the gas tank is in the wrong place. Did you have exhaust come out behind the wheel, in front, turn downs, or off the back of the bumper????

My driver's side exhaust routes under the engine in, at the rear of the pan, just forward of the bellhousing. Then it comes along side the pass. side pipe and both go back on the passenger side above the trans x-member. With turbo style mufflers staggered they fit up inside the frame rails aft of the t-case. You can either dump it out the side in front of the rear tire or route it up over the rear axle and go out the back.

I have Doug Thorley's on my 88GW. Very nice sound. With custom 3" single and a Flowmaster 50 muffler.
Low and mid range was unchanged, but the top
realy opend up.
They aren't cheap but you get what you pay for.
It might be ok to dump it out in front of the rear wheel on a truck. But on a Cherokee or Wagoneer it will suck exhaust fumes in if the widows are down.
Just my .02
