In order of increasing severity (starting at pretty bad):

1.) Little/no movement in 4wd.
2.) whirring/clanging noises accompanying 1.)
3.) A noise that sounds like bits of aluminum being ground to dust between steel gears (which is exactly the source of the sound--AMHIK).
4.) 6 pints of Dexron on the ground under the 'case.
5.) No movement at all in any gear/mode.

BTW, if it simply goes bad, you'll probably only get #1. My first 229's VC exploded.

My second 229 jumped out of gear while crossing a highway. (see sig)

Thanks Baker, I used it the other day and it was very slow going it and I couldn't get it out of 4wd. When I got home I lifted the rear wheels off the ground and they spun until everything was loose. Then it would come right out. I wonder if it didn't engage properly. Slow vacumn shift motor.(hopefully)
I don't have any of the items you listed thankfully.

OUCH ON YOUR WAG!!
