have an opportunity to buy a 9" ford with disc break conversion so Im wondering if I should go with it. Currently Im running factory amc 20 but want to move up to 36 or 38" tires. So I was contemplating changing to disc anyway cause it doesnt stop that great right now with just the 33's on her. Is a 9" stronger then the 20? will it be strong enough? the guy is asking $400 cdn. for it which works out to about 260.00usd. Sounds like good deal to me but would like more input from y'all if possible. :D cheers all

You'll need to find a place to redrill the rotors to your bolt pattern. It sounds like a good deal to me, I'm putting a 9" with discs in a 60 Wag. Does it have the same gears you have in the front? Do the rotors have the parking brakes built in to them? i thought $400 Canadian was about $50 US.......... LMAO

Not all 9 incher's are created equal. Is it a truck version? 31 spline? Also 77-79 Lincoln Versailles had 9 inch rears with factory disc brakes. I'd definitely stay away from one of those in a truck application.
Make sure the rear you're looking at has the big bearings, and the truck wheel pattern. Personally I think the 9 inch would be a great axle for a built truck. Strong, light, great aftermarket support. The pinion is low, but with the wheelbase in a FSJ that isn't an issue.

64, could a Dana 60 (8 bolt) be drilled to 6? Thanks.

It sure can, we used to put them in CJ's and drilled them for 5 on 5.5. You can also get aftermarket axles already to go.

Why would you stay away from the Lincoln 9"....?
I know some guys using those and running 9 sec 1/4 miles times with them and they hold up just fine with 600-800 RWHP...
I think they would work, unless you know something that I don't.

sheesh, wish i had 50.00 american, then i could just buy a built rig.....lmfao
Seriously though the dif.came out of a bronco the owner put in a 60, he had the disc conversion done himself, says it cost him 500.00 for the work. gotta check and see if its rigged for park though. gears dont really matter cause i want to change them anyway

The car 9" is fine for drag racing..but wont take wheeling as well because the stress involved is alot different.

im with stuka. the pinion is low,and the 9" is really not that strong. i defiantely would not consider it an upgrade from an amc 20. id persoanlly keep the 20. the only real advantage,IMO,is the overwhelming amt of aftermarket stuff availalbe, since its so popular in street rods.
i for one wouldleave the 9 inch for the street rod crowd.ive been wheelin my amc 20 for over 3 years with 38s,the last year of which has been welded.its a pretty tough axle.

I've had really good luck with the 9" both as a front and a rear. They're strong, and have a ton of accessories available. I'm thinking about replacing my 44's with a pair of 9"s. A friend of mine has 2 different drop out sets, one is 5:38's with Detriots and the other 3:55's and open. It takes him about an hour to swap them, it's a really slick set up.

Lil Chief,
You need to dot the leg work on this before you make up your mind. First to say amc 20 or ford 9" is stronger, are you talking case strength or axle ring gear strength. ford and amc 20 are about the same size so I couldn't say one was stronger. You can look up the dementions. As for the case I would say the amc has the edge there. you might be gettting into more than you thing with the disk break change. You may need a new brake booster and proportioning valve to start, and you most likely will have to change out some break lines at the same time. the $400 cdn. could end up costing you $800-1000
