My AMC Jeep Special Equipment service catolog mentioned them twice.
Once when installing the Ramsey PTO winch kit on to J-Series vehicles.
It says that the optional engery absorbing shocks cannot be used with the winch kit and must be removed. And that they must be re-installed if the winch is removed.
The second time is when installing Class I and II hitches onto Cherokee's and Wagoneers. It says that they cannot be used with the energy absorbing bumpers.
I've never heard any other mention of them, and certainly never seen any.
Have any of you?

Right... It's going to be on the same page of the parts list with the first gear synchro advertised in the '65 Jeep salesman brochure for the dually rigs... ;)

I can say that when I was rear ended by a Honda Accord going 40mph while I was stopped that there was no energy absorption as far as I could tell on the rear bumper on my '72  . Though I must admit the crumple zone on the Honda worked very well  . In all seriousness I would imagine the energy absorbing bumpers were for low speed impacts. In all my experience with FSJ's I have not seen them but I learn something new all the time.

I once had the crumple zone of a Caddy do it's thing against the front bumper of my 81 Chero. I chuckled as I drove all the way home (while the Caddy bled out on the road).
BTW - Other guy's fault.

Could be, but I thinkn it's odd that it's mentioned in a Spec. Equip. service manual.
Then again, it said they where optional and it doesn't have a section on servicing them. Maybe it was a factory option?
If it was even available.

OH, they certainly exist. I know where there is a pair mounted up front on an older Waggy. Not sure of the year, but if I'm not mistaken, it was a passengers side drop front end, and I believe the rear bumper is a 3 piece. I believe the front has been removed.
I'm going off of memory on the bumpers, but absolutely sure of the impact absorbers. Next time I get out that way I'll snap some pics of them. They look like the type that GM used to install on their larger cars.

That would be great!
Probably never see another set of them.

Only set I've ever seen. Was considering installing them on my Honcho, (cheap insurrance), butt couldn't figure out how to make them work with my brush guard.

I had a 74 Matador coupe, that had them front and rear.
They probably used the same ones for the jeep.
