when you are wheeling in the middle of nowhere and there is no winching point and you are alone how do you get yourself out ??????? i run into this all the time in mexico in the sand back in the ol days when i was broke but full of energy i would bury my spare for a winching point what do all you big bad 4 wheelers use to get out/unstuck ?????

In Wyo, there is usually something to winch off of,,but not always. Sometimes you have to get creative w/ the spare, etc.
One of the neater things I have seen...not tried is two pieces of 1/2 in pipe w/ a chain link welded onto them about 45degrees. These pipe are 3-4ins long. Connect the two w/ a small(3/16) cable lanyard approx 3ft long. Us a solid rod w/ head and pound the two pieces of pipe into the ground(dirt not sand) about two ft apart until you just have part of the lanyard out of the ground. supposedly, the angled chain link makes the pipe turn sideways in the ground,,,voila easy deadman.
I know folks who carry old axles to pound into the ground as well. I've gone so far as digging around ant hills(frozen) and pulled myself out.

there are sand spike lines, you have multiple loops, 3-6 to set sand stakes in the ground, like the previous poster said, you can bury anything, log, spare, the girlfriend, with a wrap of cable, in sand you want to moderate cable tension, usually a mild tug will get you rolling, nothing beats a low tire pressure foot print.

I have also used the spare tire as an anchor with a come along when I lived in AZ. One bad stuck I had in a CJ5 i actually jacked the back wheel up and put my rear bench seat back under it to get out of the hole i was in. Drastic yup did it work....... well im here.:drivin:

pull pals work well, bit easier to set than a spare tire, less weight to lug around aswell

http://www.pullpal.com/

not cheap to buy new but used they're not to bad, easy to build your own too

I would jack up each tire that is stuck, fill the hole with whatever I can find, dirt, rocks, wood. Then gun it!

I don't have a winch... but I have 2 hi-lift jacks that came with the jeep. I don't air down until I need to either, meaning that the first time I come to a stop and appear to be getting stuck I take my foot OFF the skinny pedal and step out to lower the tires' pressures. Walk right out of whatever it is, and proceed with caution cause the next time is gonna require creativity.

I have a box I throw in the back when I know I'm going offroad, it has ubolts and other small misc parts, tow straps, tent stakes, etc. Something in there is bound to get me out, and I've been stuck in mud, sand, snowpack...you get the drift.

Kinda what I was thinkin', just use a fluke style anchor.

A twelve pack and a cell phone will usually get you out.

LOL...well the best thing to do is not get stuck by having your rig ready...lower the tire preasure for a wider track is the best bet... I always run with others but cant rely on the smaller vehicals to get my rig out.

Living in the PNW there is always a way to get a winch line to something... So good luck and be a Boy Scout in the way of being prepared...

PS bring lots of water

Can't speak to sand. But, virtually all the times I've been stuck, I've gotten myself out with a high lift or -- a snatch strap from another rig (the latter doesn't fit with an "alone" scenario obviously) Hi lift: by jacking up the truck and putting rocks under the appropriate tire(s) or by pushing the truck off the jack (careful!!!!!) in a direction that gets it off the obstruction.

As I've gotten out of loads of tough spots with help or helped others do the same, I think it's a good idea to NOT wheel alone. I wouldn't do any trail that wasn't super easy by myself (breakdowns are possible though). I usu bring the necessary survival stuff and have ham radios and used to have a decent cell. With the cell phone I have now, I'd be in trouble anywhere except metro areas.

Have heard of burying the tire, but never tried it or seen it done. I never seem to wheel in places lacking in anchor points for whatever reason.

PS: I hardly ever have used a winch or seen one used on the trail. Maybe I just wheel with extremely careful folks. I dunno

I wheel alone just to get away by myself. I always make sure someone knows where I'm going and hope my cell will work out there. I have had my kids or wife pull me out with their big F trucks. We live near the Glamis dunes and a lot of sand between.

One of my sons taught me this procedure last winter for getting out of sand. Use a high lift jack and jack up the rear to the origional ground level. Use a shovel and fill in the holes. Jack up the front to the origional ground level and fill in those holes. Now gently drive or back out. Repete as needed. I use the hitch reciever in back and the brush guard in front for convienent jacking points.

In sand, if you feel yourself bogging down, do not stop, keep going, perhaps even down shift gently and keep your revs up in your power band. I rarely use 4low out here, just too slow with too much torque unless I'm climbing something solid. Best for soft sand is 4hi in second, but you'll find yourself mostly in first. Avoid breaking to a stop, the sand will stop you just fine. No sudden jerky accelerations. I am always amazed at what my stock hight wag can manage well. Lockers or posi's would help a lot, a lift and larger tires with more footprint would also help.

Every time I have been stuck in sand I was not paying attention.

Every time I have been stuck in sand I was not paying attention.[/quote] I end up wheelin' alone alot. All winter were' layin' out dirt bike rides&cleanin' up trails, mostly use motorcycles but alot of work in the truck&jeeps now a days all my rigs have winches but in the past I've used all the tricks,We have what we call "sugar sand" here almost a liquid when dry, it takes aquired skill to drive in as I started out drivein' it with 2x4's I had a steep learnin' curve! Not gettin' buried too deep is the first lession always carry a shovel and yes I have carried a "danforth" style anchor in the past&used it! the smallest one works just fine,Air down keep up mometum with out too much power,Big heavy v8's are a liability here as the trails are so tite they can't " be let out" to use there power big sixes work very good.See ya in da woods!:drivin:

I also wheel alone to get away from people. Stay away from stuff that is a rollover risk and you will be fine. People act like getting stuck alone is the end of the world... Sure its a PITA but it really won't hurt you in any way. If you can't get yourself out you walk out and pay or otherwise bribe someone to come back and help (or if you like me just bring you other vehicle back there and pull youself out... Still requires a friend to drive one home though)... I have walked out or camped and then walked out plenty of times... I can't speak for everyone else but I can use the exersise anyway.

Don't have a winch and there is always something to hook to here anyway so I can't speak to the original point. Usually I use a hi-lift or come-along to winch myself out... Slow but pretty effective most of the time.

cell phones/gps dont work in mexico and there is no towing let alone people on most of the beaches in mexico the truck tips the scales at 8100lbs and the tralier at 2600lb you can go a month or more on the beach without seeing anybody http://travel.webshots.com/album/273792664ovbbjb?vhost=travel&start=0

THAT is AWESOME.

I will go there with my jeep and/or van one day.

But yeah... Most of us don't wheel in a place quite that rugged... Though I would venture to say GPS does work there (probably better than many urban areas thanks to clear views of the sky) as it is designed (in part) to guide ICBMs... Can't have those things loosing signal just because they happen to be a few hundred miles from a city.

i always carry my hi-lift. if/when i get stuck alone, i jack it up, and find as many rocks or chunks of wood as i can, and build a road under each tire until i can drive out. it sucks, but has actually been more tried and true than my winch. many times, i don't even bother spooling out the winch, which is a pile o' dog feces that only works half the time anyway. it almost always works when i'm pulling someone else out, but when I'M stuck all i get is clicks from the solenoid, so i sold it, and bought a motorscooter and a second hi-lift:thumbsup:

Lots of great idea's.

Consider Safety first when attempting any of them. We carry a chainsaw because so many dead pine trees from beatle infestation.

winch snatch straps and block. Make a check list and load the rig with all the right tools.
