I just picked up a early 80's J20 and I am wondering which t-case is in it. It has a 360/727 The lever says 2wd, 4wd, n, 4low. Is this the NP228 and if so is it better than the NP229?

thanks

That will be a NP 208 part time case. Manual locking hubs on the front axle, right? ;)

Ya, manual hubs.....is it better than 229?

Yes I think it is. It is a Part Time case, chain drive front output. It is a decent case can stand moderate wheeling. Low range is 2.61

Same as the 208 2.6:1

So would it be worth swaping into my GW?

Keep the 208! the 229 is vacuum operated, and has a viscious coupling for AWD capability. I personally don't like having my tcase or front axle operated by vacuum. I prefer to manually shift my components.

Well it does not blow the VC coupler as the NP229 is known to do. I do like the NP229 as I do the NP208. I suppose I would swap it if I were to wheel it, regularly. For a daily driver I would probally leave it as it is. If you decide to swap it you will need a rear driveshaft from a NP208 equipped Wag or Cherokee or any Pre 80 Quadra- Trac Wag or Chero.

Or I could shorten the shaft out of the J20 right?

I think you will find that to be more costly and the diameter of the driveshaft is larger, I know the driveshaft runs pretty close to the gas tank so that will also be a consideration if the larger diameter will clear the tank. But yea you could do that.
