Guys..

I'm doing a lot of reading up and preparation for my next fix.. a leaking rear axle. I found this link (among others) and this one seemed to be the best as far as describing the process. http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/axle/superior02/

With the exception of using the gear puller to get the bearing out, is this fairly accurate write-up regarding the process?

Things I don't know:
* exact Dana44 axle type (i.e. tapered vs. flanged). Been told it's tapered as there is a big fat castle nut and cotter pin seems to prove that it is.
* what tool is used to get the axle shaft out? service manual makes it look like a slide hammer.. but does anyone have a link to the tool(s) needed? HF, Matco, Craftsman, etc?
* service manual (again) states to check and replace (if necessary) the inner axle seal, does the tapered shaft have an inner seal? Not seeing in in the exploded diagram.
* adjustments to the wheel bearings; will the existing shims set me up right or would you recommend going through the process. It says the tolerance should be .001 - .006" end float.

Thanks ahead of time. yes.. noob here but i'm doing my best to keep her and learn. :-D

I haven't done the job myself on this specific axle.

Check out the Dana 44 manual here starting at page 27....

Thanks. That manual is so much better than the Jeep Service Manual I have.

Thanks again!

When I put in a locker, I just bumped the brake backing plate with a rubber mallet a couple of times and that was enough to get the whole axle shaft assembly to pop free. No special tool needed.
