Ok, i don't know a lot bout axles yet, so I was just wondering how many splines are my dana 44 axles? Are the more splines better? I was going to count them when i changed the fluid but haven't got around to that yet. thanks

d44 f/r, 4" suspension lift,
Wimpy 31X10.50 at the present
time.
Look what's stamped onto them.
F.i. 3.54 46-13
3.54 = gear ratio
46 = ring teeth count
13 = pinion teeth count
What's better depends on how you use your rig. Low gear ratio for motorway; high gear ratio for off road.
Rob..
I beleive what maynard is refering to is the # of splines on the ends of the axles themselves.
Yes, more splines, more stronger...
I am not sure about 76' but more than likely they are 30 spline axles. d44's were available with 10 spline axles in the early days but I believe they were phaseed out a long time ago. You will more than likely need to pull an axle to count the splines as the splines reside in an axle end gear( sun gear) when installed.
Best...

You should have 30 or 31... on the axle shafts...MAN I just had my rear axle completely rebuilt a month ago, you would think I would remember... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/mad.gif

Like most of us, I learn a lot about our fsj's on the forum. But there is an extra benefit; for me it's a language course as well.... Sorry for the misunderstanding, guys; http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/redface.gif it will probably not be the last one.

I've been rebuilding a front WT D44 (from an 81 or 82 Chero) and I'm pretty sure I counted 19 on mine. Am I way off base here or did I count those right?
Also, whats the difference between a 19 spline axle and a 30 spline axle (besides the number of splines http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif). In other words, what is it those extra splines make stronger?

OH YEAH.... Adam.... the more splines the better... that's why I don't linke the design of the 10 Spline output shaft of the TH400 for the QT!!!! should have about 40!!!!

http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif ohmegosh,yes an 80 or 81 axle should definately have 30 splines.are you counting the splines on the ends of the inner shafts,where they enter the side gear? i cant even imagine how this would be possible. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif your front end is open knuckle,yes?its not possible to swap the axleshafts from a passenger side diff to a driver side diff,and all jeeps of the era used a passenger side diff.if a ford 44 was the same width,it may have been possible that someone swapped the axleshafts and side gears in the diff into your newer housing,but that doesnt make much logical sense(tho i guess it has been established that PO's do not always do stuff that makes logical sense http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif )
so just to make sure were on the same page:
1)youre working on an 81 axle,open knuckle,with a driver side diff?
2)any evidence its been swapped in?torched off,or sloppily welded shock mounts or spring perches?
3)which splines were you counting?
Also, whats the difference between a 19 spline axle and a 30 spline axle (besides the number of splines http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif). In other words, what is it those extra splines make stronger?
a bigger spline seems it should be stronger,but actually more smaller splines provide alot more surface area,therefore more strength,where the splines contact one another.

Hehe, I feel a little stupid now. I was counting the wrong end. Yes, the side that goes into the diff where they enter the side gear does have 30 splines. Its the part that goes into the hub that had 19.
