Has anyone heard of these? I was going over my new 1977 Cherokee last night and pulled the dist cap and noticed that it didnt look like the inside of any distributor I've ever seen. It has a tag on the side that said Pertronix, I didnt get the model number. What do I need to do to this distributor in a tune up? Doesnt look like it has points??? Thanks for your assistance.

Maybe it says Prestolite? That's whats in the Beast right now, but I really want to get rid of it and put in a new Dist. Anyonw have any recommendations? And is it true you have to keep your old dist. gear and fit it to the new dist? If so,why?

Pertronix is a drop in magnetic pickup that replace points. I have used them many times on buggies. they cost about $60 and replace points in almost any vehicle.....they work GREAT!!! and an FYI Pertronix work perfect or they don't work at all....I have never seen one work sporadically......and I have NEVER seen or heard of one failing...thank your PO!
no prob slip!.....you said the exact same thing in half the words......! ;)
tune up would consist of cap and rotor....

Its a Prestolite my '77 J20 has it too. You can replace it with a newer Motorcraft dist. The Motorcraft is also a much better distributor.

Pertronix makes the "Ignitor" system--a drop-in Hall-effect electronic ignition that replaces the breaker points. It's maintenance-free, no adjustments required.
Sorry, Veepster, your reply wasn't up yet when I started posting mine! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

Rudy....I am not familiar with your references......but I will try.
it is a magnetic pickup....a sleeve slides over the dist shaft and has 8(v8) madnets in it as it spins the hall sensor in the main piece picks up the magnets as they pass and sends the signal to the coil to fire....
it is not the light beam style....like a Mallory Uni-Lite

Thanks for the replies everyone. I should have been more clear. The tag on the outside of the distributor actually says Prestolite, the thing inside the distributor says Pertronix, so your all correct http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
