View Full Version : Carb Problems?!?!?!?!?!?

This is how it is:
I idled the wag in the driveway for maybe 5 minutes or so, before I started I had to pump the gas.
A friend of mine came over(5 minutes later)& I was in the middle of showing him how the engine runs when it stalls after running 30 seconds when I barely tap the gas.
It wouldn't crank back up so we used quick-start& it ran until it burned the quick-start off& stalled. My friend told me the flaps in the carb weren't moving when I was starting it, are they supposed to move(they only move when it runs for a while)? Then he thought it might be gum in the carb, so I used gum-out& after I waited the 5 minutes I started it& it stalled within 5 seconds, every time I tried after that it wouldn't start but it just sputter& die. Almost as if it wasn't getting fuel, maybe flodded?
What do ya'll think's wrong here?
1 more thing...Iv'e been looking into 4 barrel Edlebrock carbs, can you snorkel them?

... ... The first thing to do would be sure the engine is getting fuel. With the engine NOT running pull the Air Cleaner, look for fuel pools on the manifold, a sign of flooding or a float problem. Next look down in the carburetor. Is the choke valve wide open when hot as it should be? If OK look down in the carburetor and open the throttle 4 times quickly. If a fair amount of fuel squirts out into the barrels then the accelerator and fuel pump are OK... and the engine may be flooded.
... If no or very little fuel squirts out then you may have a bad accelerator or fuel pump and maybe a short term vapor lock.
… A cool idea is two buy a matching carburetor from a salvage yard and learn to rebuild it in your spare time. It doesn’t take long to swap them out for a test.

HARD STARTING HOT
… A hard to start or vapor locked hot engine can be caused by the following flooding, advanced timing, carburetor bowl boiling, choke set to rich, vapor lock, hot starter motor (close to exhaust manifold) and poor electrical connections. Ignition components such as modules, coils and distributors can temporally fail do to overheating. When the engine is stopped air no longer flows over the hot exhaust manifolds. The manifolds are going to feed heat back to the engine so everything gets very hot for a short time.
have a good one ;) and CUL.. Don S..

I prolly got 5 gallons left...the gas from the local Texaco is so bad that the wag was blowing white smoke out the pipe
Did the white smoke stop after it's warmed up? Blown head gasket?

My '87 did the exact same thing with the run and stall. I put gas down the carb and it ran for a couple of seconds, then it stalled again. I put about 2 gallons of gas into the tank, because it was low, and changed out the fuel filter near the carb. I also got some engine start spray and put some into the carb. It started and ran rough for about 15 seconds, then it smoothed out. I've had no trouble starting it since then (about a week now). The filter was cheap, like $3-4 and the spray was a couple of bucks. A really cheap fix for something that I just scratched my head on for a week.

I changed out both fuel filters the day I got the wag...I didn't drain the gas before I got it running(it sat for 2&1/2 years). It kicked, backfired, knocked& pinged till that gas was all burnt up...I have been using quick-start spray& getting these results
The smoke was a huge cloud of white smoke& after about 5 minutes it went to a small amount of blue smoke, doesn't smoke now(had me so freaked out).
I tried it again today(w/quick-start)& it puffed 2 quick puffs& wouldn't do it again even w/the quick-start, I think it might be the ignition coil it is the original one w/162,000 miles on it.
