View Full Version : Wheel vibes on low speed corners

BlueVelvet has had an intermittant vibration when turning corners at low speed (under 10mph) from what seems to be the right front wheel. It's a brrr...brrr...brrr sound, like almost the tire is rubbing against something. It's not rubbing against anything, however.
You can feel it through the floorboards and steering wheel, but the minute i straighten out, speed up or touch the brakes, it stops.
This problem came up a while ago after Allied did her brakes (7 different trips for them to get it right), and we just went back there today to have them look at it. They found the right brake pad was a bit loose, and tightened it up..... but just as we got back, it did it again!
This problem is a real @$&#%, because the first time i took it to my mechanic, he did donuts in a parkinglot for 20 minutes, and the vibration didn't happen once!
Of course the minute i left there, after apologizing for wasting George's time, the vibration came back.
Could this be a CV/u-joint problem? My experience with bad CVs is a constant vibration under all driving conditions.

Since the problem started after the brakes were done that is where I would start. Drum brakes?? Pretty hard to screw up a brake job - but not impossible. I suggest you check the bearings. Jack the wheel off the ground and check for any play. It sounds like the bearing may be lose allowing something to rub. Usually the CV joint will make a clicking or popping sound, not the sound you desribe.

LOL, yeah, it's hard to screw up a brake-job, but Allied did it six times in a row, at two different shops. And they just redone the front discs and calipers AGAIN today. They sure are making it hard on themselves and losing money. It's kinda a running joke with us now to see how long it'll take these jokers to get it right.

Her bearings were almost new, but i haven't personally jacked the Wagoneer up since her brakes were done the first time.
I'll check wheel play ASAP.

check the whole front end for play. visually inspect your axle shaft u-joints as they are an often overlooked part.

factory ones will not have a zerk(sp??) to stick grease into. a pain in the butt, but could definately be the problem. my 86 needed to have them done as it had 200K miles on the originals. you can look at them without removing anything to see what type of condition they are in.
