View Full Version : Snow Plow Interchange!?!?

I ran across an '80 Cherokee the other night for sale, with a plow on it. Or should I say a plow with a shot '80 Cherokee on it? Seriously...the Cherry is about as bad as anything I've seen....even "me", who drives beaters, would think twice about even remotely considering doing anything more than parting that Cherokee out(and I'm not sure what you could even part "out" of it actually)...it's awful.
And...the guy wants over $900 for the thing...yikes! The plow hydraulics even need a little work, but otherwise the plow "looks" good.
OK....what I'm wondering is what other FSJs this plow might fit on? The 80 Cherokee is a 4 door narrow track with a 258/auto combination, and not much body left to speak of(all rotted away). I've seen better Jeeps in Junkyards!
I have a '76 J10(Honcho) that I would like to put a snow plow on yet, so definitely wondering if it might fit that!?!? I know when I've looked up plows before, it seems I can readily order one for my '78(or any '78 and up j-truck), but not sure about '77 and back. Were there differences in the front frame there? Would I be able to put that plow on my '78? I would much prefer to put a plow on the '76, but just curious what the plow might fit on. Anyone know much on this?
If anyone is "really" interested in this rig, let me know....it's only about 10 miles from me and at the price this guy wants, I'd be surprised to see it sell anytime soon.
Anyway...thanks for any input....

900 is probably pretty cheap for a working plow. You should see what some of those go for on eBay http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif!

Yes, and this one might run $1500-2000 "new", but that is flawless working condition, and not a heap connected to it. I don't mean to knock the Cherokee, but it's a shame to see that(I mean it's REALLY bad). If the guy fixed the hydraulics(he said it raises fine, but doesn't come down properly or something....I didn't even have him show me, I was so shocked at the price), THEN, I might consider $700-900 for the thing(and then only if it actually fits my '76). I've seen used plows(usually for Chevies or Fords) for under $500 in this neck of the woods, and many of those are already OFF the vehicle! I had seen a "new" plow in Kmart(of all places) I could have gotten for like $800 this past winter...it might not have been as nice as this one, but it was new and would fit my '78, but no listing for the '76 J10s. I only paid $400 for the Honcho, so I guess maybe I'm spoiled, but thinking of a $900 plow to go on my $400 truck kinda makes me sick. But, I do know what you're saying, and "if" the plow could actually fit my truck('76), I would consider it more....if not, I doubt I would. That's why I'm asking about the interchange...and still trying to get over the price. He did admit he was selling the "plow" but you get the Cherokee with it....the Cherokee itself is pretty much junkyard material...at best!

Yup I have done that before. You know...Sell a piece of crap with some nice wheels and tires to get the heep moved! Is the plow PTO or a pump on the engine?
Never mind that question cause it wouldn't be PTO. I am thinking back to my military days when we had combo PTO stuff which that would not need a PTO to work so scratch that question.

yes the plow is interchangable, and a new plow runs around $2000-3000(western).

Double check the frame width..but I think YaZaHx is right. If the frame width is the same or similiar, dont know why it wont fit.

No, not PTO. In fact, I doubt a pump either....I did see a pump on a '72 J-truck once and thought it a great setup! I believe this plow is electric with the outside pump on the plow frame! I think it was Meyers(yellow), and I can't recall if it was an angle plow or manual swing, but am guessing angle offhand.
The last week has been crazy and I was making a mad dash to town and back and saw the rig on the way back. It's down this side road and I saw it as I drove by, so turned around and went down the side road. I'd seen the rig before, but it was WAY behind the guy's house and I couldn't tell what it was for sure(but knew it was a FSJ!). I would have guessed mid 70s from a distance, so was surprised at an '80 Cherry! The guy has used it as a plow only(hasn't even licensed it in years), so the plow has been on there...not added in to get rid of the Cherry. I am thinking I will do some measuring on the GW here('84) and see how that compares to the '76 Honcho....hadn't thought of that before(doh!)....as that should be a pretty good comparison. The one nice thing about this one is that it's a short drive to here with it(probably only about 5-7 miles and I can take backroads!).
I just thought it odd that when I looked up listings before, '78+ J-trucks were no problem, but never saw listings for '77-back for plows. I am sure they made them, but just wondering if maybe there was a supposed difference. Thought I'd see if anyone knew. I won't be dealing with much Jeep stuff(other than an oil change here as soon as I can) until I get some other work done(buick, plymouth, etc.), as it seems all these other cars want work done on them....yeeks!
Anyway....thanks for the input so far....anymore is welcome.
