View Full Version : High Clearance Rear Fuel Tanks for Wagoneers

Hey guys, there are a lot of threads and posts about rear fuel tanks but most of them hang down way to low for an off road vehicle...
What have you guys found that works while keeping the tank tucked up in the frame rails or within 3-4 inches of being tucked up? Pictures would be great aswell as any information on plumbing the tanks and skid plate options.
Hopefully we can make this thread something that can be used as a future reference so be sure to post up your high clearance fuel tanks

I will try and remeber to take a pic tomarrow, but I have what my dad swears is a XJ tank shoehorned between the frame rails behind my rear axle (I did not remove the tank myself, but he keeps saying it was from a Cherokee -- the small one). It does not hang down too much below the frame and I only needed to tweek it about an 1/8" to make it fit.
With the leaf springs it is pretty safe so far, but I plan to put some sort of skid on it before I trailer it across the country to KOH next spring.

See my sig file for a link to how I used a 91 S10 2 door Blazer tank.
It does not hang down below my trailer hitch and I don't think it's any lower than the spare tire that was there before.

definitely way to low... if your concerned about clearance at all like i am the hitch was the first thing to go, im going to a bumper hitch instead
i may sound a bit paranoid but i do NOT want to be stranded due to a busted tank

I think you can bang and dent those metal tanks an awful lot before you get a leak in them. What kind of rocks do you HAVE out in Ohio?
I'll measure the distance when I get back home, but I don't think the trailer hitch hangs more than 4 inches below the frame. I use my hitch as a skide plate to protect my bumper!

i do agree that a metal tank can take a lot of abuse but thats what im trying to avoid by keeping it tucked up, it would suck to smash the tank and cut off fuel supply by smashing the fuel pickup or decrease capacity
would the tank be protected by a shackle flip fairly well? side shots might help aswell as a centered rear if you can?

Anyone know what fuel capacity comes with those S10 tanks?

I am running a 19 gal ford F150 tank that is all but flush with the bottom of the frame. I am not running a body lift. It did require a very slight amount of trimming.
Granted, I would like more range, but at least a thousand paper cuts at the gas pump do not sting so bad..

the one i got is 20 gal and i'm leaving my stock tank in so i can get 40gal.
got the tank out of the junk yard for $50 w/pump and better yet it works great with the TBI i just put on.i think that some of the s10 tanks can be 12or15 gal but not sure.

I'm half tempted to build my own tank but not sure what thickness steel i should use...... if i do such i would probably either make a 1/4" thick skid to bolt right to the frame to help hold the tank in.... any thoughts?

I have a 40 gal. tank that I bought from "Ace Tank" that was made for the waggon...The only problem was the pick-up that was supplied did not fit so I had to use the old one, so half a tank shows up as empty on the gauge...Which is cool and acts like a 20 gal. reserve...LOL

My XJ tank hangs down further than I remembered. Hard to get it up tehre without cutting out the floor. It jsut seemed high because of the lift and 42's. I have a 16 gal fuel cell that will make it in here soon. In one of the pics you can see the future bob, I am tired of slamming hitch/bumper on every drop off .... I know there is some booty fab in there, but the rear end is getting reworked with the cage next month.

Any pictures of this?
Here is one. I can take a few more this weekend when I am in VA where the GW resides.
An additional cross beam is welded between the frame rails in front of the tank.

that f150 tank looks like it was made to fit.... the xj is very tempting but then again, so is making my own tank, theres atleast enough room for 26 gallons under there

anyone have the measurement from the rear crossmember to the one that the tire carrier bolted to? looks like if i can fit a 31x32x7 tank i would be just over 30 gallons... im thinking 1/8th inch steel with welded on hangers for a bolt in tank and then bolt a skid plate to the bottom of the frame
i could weld it up without a problem and then seal it with POR tank sealer, only issue would be making the sending unit/pickup work, deciding on a position and then figuring out how to run a filler neck
whatcha think? wonder what the cost of a sheet of steel that big would be... guessing im looking at around $150 for the steel for the tank and mounting alone and then another $100+ for a skid plate, less if i go with expanded sheet or something like 1/8th inch diamond plate aluminum available at the local hardware store

quick and easy, looks like with a simple 32x26x6.5" tank you could achieve somewhere around 24 gallon with the filler neck and that would just be a quick and easy tank
with another step outward between the shocks you're looking at a minimum of 28 gallons with a flat bottom, take that to 8 inches with a step out and you're looking at around 34 gallons minimum which would be very simple to flat bottom with a 2 inch body lift

I just paid about $80 for a 4' x 8' x 1/8" sheet of steel. You can figure roughly $0.50 - $0.55 per pound in the small quantities we buy (at least in my part of the country).

thats not bad at all.... i think im gonna go with 14. gauge cold rolled sheet and then do a heavy skid, probably just a single flat piece of 3/16" plate, that should be plenty and it'll also help stiffen the rear of the frame
this design also leaves a ton of room where the original tank mounted to throw a surplus set of 5 ton air tanks with room to spare

fastenal can get me a sheet of 4x8 14 gauge for around $107, still need to check out a few other places

I bought mine from Ryerson Steel. Looks like there is one in Cleveland.

Don't know how far that is from you, but you may want to give them a ring.

I did the measurements once a few years back on my 79' Cherokee and came up with around 32 +/- gallons. This was a design with an angle on the bottom of the tank to help with departure angles. Nothing would sit below the frame or above the floor of the cargo area. This will obviously be a custom tank but will take full advantage of the entire spare tire area and will have much better range than the 19 gallon F350 tank.
