hey im having problems with my th400 quadra trak equipped 76 j20. Basically I just changed the fluid and I used some leftover Valvoline DuraBlend Synthetic. It says its good for dexron 3, Mercon and Mercon V. Im wondering if my tranny is messed up or its the fluid. Oh and I had to change the fluid cause My front double carden joint broke and chipped a chunk off the tranny. I fixed it by using some POR-15 Epoxy putty. I dont know if my transmission is messed up from the joint breaking or what. The truck downshifted from 3rd to second and all a sudden teh joint snapped. Any Ideas on what the problem could be?

I didnt drive it after the driveline gave loose. Im sure it has enough atf in it. It acts like the gears are catching. Like it can move off idle buy any application of throttle and it makes a horrible rattling sound and dosent go anywhere.

Your transfer-case might be in neutral; does putting the transmission in Park keep the truck from rolling?

it stays put in park. I dont think the transfer case being in neutral would cause the whole truck to shake when the throttle is applied. Does it sound like my tranny is toast?

... While you're under it check the rear and the driverside engine mounts. some times they break when that happens. The transfer case can move causing a misalighnment of the driveshafts.

Could it be that something bad happened in the front differential. The gears up there jammed, and when the tranny downshifted and increased the power available, the U-joint took the brunt of the torque and snapped. Now the U-joint is repaired but the original problem still exists in the front diff?
Could be some stripped teeth from a spider gear are getting caught in the differential gears.
I would suggest buying a new gasket for the front diff cover and pull it off to get a look in there. Its cheap and fairly simple to do.

Well as of right now im not running a front drive shaft and that might be why its not running correctly due to the quadra track. I just replaced my motor and tranny mounts to urethane ones so I dunno about that. Basically I just wanna know if running that fluid would cause any problems at all? And does running withought a front driveshaft hurt anything at all in a quadratrack equipped jeep. Thanks.

...I sure hope you put the T-Case into E-Drive.
If you didn't that may be the problem.

… Unless it is in E-Drive Please do not drive the truck unless all axles and wheels are capable of taking power and driving because this will damage the cone-clutches. Unlocked locking hubs (if so equipped) while in standard-drive will damage the cone-clutches.
I have removed a drive shaft and put it into e-drive and driven with no problems.

Well ive tried driving it in e-drive and normal drive. Made no difference. Maybe the t-case is bad and not the tranny? How much driving would it take to mess up the cone clutches?

millertime;
... Here is a link about the BW-1339 case that goes into detail about how it works.
The main thing is the LSD inside the case will screw up if it doesn't have something to drive againest at both ends i.e. it will wear itself out. It is also possible shear the shaft splines on the clutch packs.
There is a cone clutch torque test in the link.

... When the joint broke it could have screwed up the T-Case or something in it.
The horrible rattling sound could be the sound of the chain jumping on the sprocket and therefore not driving. This well could be the problem...
Is the T-Case oil level still OK? Drain just a little oil out and look for steel grit in the plug or alumimun dust in the oil.
Think I'll sleep on that..
