Hey Guys and Gals it is official, Dates of our 3rd Annual FSJ Enchilada is October 28-31st. As usual this is a casual get together for some great wheelin. We typically stay at the KOA. Leah and her staff make this a great place to stay. We have the entire section reserved as we have in the past. Here is the email I received from Leah with KOA Las Cruces.
Please read carefully as there is a cut off date to get the group rate.
Michael-
Look forward to working with your group again this year - if I'm not mistaken this is the 3rd annual event.
As a reminder, the group area is our deluxe tenting, which provides electricity, and also includes our RV water and electric section (these RV sites can handle any rig 22 feet and under). Four sites will offer grassed tenting, and five sites will offer pea gravel tenting. Each site can handle up to two small tents and no more than four people.
As I've done in the previous two years, I've closed off this area to meet your group needs. As you've had cabins get rented in the past I've closed those off as well. These sites have been closed for an arrival date of October 27th and a departure date of November 1st.
For those members in your group that have not been to our campground before, our park site map can be viewed at either our website, www.lascrucescampgrounds.com (http://www.lascrucescampgrounds.com/) or at KOA's website, www.lascruceskoa.com (http://www.lascruceskoa.com/). The group area are sites 88, 90, 92, 93, and 95-99. The Kamping Kitchen is over in this area, which will allow for food prep. Additionally, there are BBQ grills at your disposal.
As done previously, we are willing to provide you with our 10% group discount. The rates quoted below will include the discount and taxation. Reservations must be made by September 27th to get the group discount.
Deluxe Tenting/RV Water Electric: Each site is $29.54 for two adults, or are $39.10 for four adults per night.
Basic Tenting: As offered in the past, should your group need more than the nine sites in the group area, we can spill your party over into basic tenting (in particular sites 76-79). Since these sites do not offer electricity, each site will be $26.67 for two adults, or will be $36.23 for four adults per night.
One Room KOA Cabins: Each one-room cabin can sleep up to four. Each cabin will be $53.92 for two adults, or will be $63.48 for four adults per night.
Our reservation deposit and cancellation policies are as follows:
Reservation Deposit Policy: We will need to obtain a deposit equal to the first nights' stay in order to guarantee a reservation, by processing either a Mastercard or Visa at the time of the call. We will collect the balance of the other nights upon arrival into the campground.
Cancellation Policy: RV and Tent sites have up until 48 hours prior to arrival to cancel their reservation in order to obtain a refund, less a $10 cancellation fee.
Cabins have up until 7 days prior to arrival to cancel their reservation in order to obtain a refund, less a $10 cancellation fee.
Guests must identify themselves as being with the International Full Size Jeep Association party in order to receive the group discount, and in order to be placed within your group area.
As for trailer accommodation, same as the previous two years - we can accommodate parking for some trailers in the group area. The overflow parking behind the store can be used for trailer spill over, if needed.
WOOT!
Thank You.
I'll get in touch with Leah ASAP
I am really hoping some of our close (and far) members can make it this year.
It's a good time for all, you don't have to beat your rig to death unless you want to. Beautiful country and some amazing rigs.
It's one of those places I think about settling down in some day.

Thanks for setting this up again Michael! I have my sites on Las Cruces for the end of October. I will still be running D44s if the toastmaster can get there. :p if not, I'll come down in the screamin' Eagle and hitch a ride. :fsj:

Hey Michael, what are the temps like like that time of year? Is it hotter than a cooter brown or is tent camping feasible?

I just reserved tent site 93 for 4 nights beginning Wed, Oct 27. WOOT! :fsj:
It is pretty decent weather at that time. Last October, it got a little toasty (mid-high 80s) during the day but it was probably high 60s, low 70s at night and comfy tent camping.

Since we are a bit latter this year, I would guess it will get colder at night. Two years ago a few nights were in the 40's but last year around the 60's like Flint said. All in all October has great weather.

from the way back machine for a KOA map... ...the area circled in green has the sites Michael mentioned.
Well I sort of forgot about a map for this year :o a couple other things I'm sure.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesOct2009/LCKOAMAP1.jpg
The area circled in green is where most folks stayed last year, it worked well.
The area circled in blue are the cabins, Michael stayed in one so I'll let him comment on that.
The area circled in black is just another tent area, not sure if it gets the discount but it is shaded and closer to the bathrooms (us old people like that).
Catching up on some email/posting updates.
Leah has Em and I in 92 again.
Can't wait to test out the front D60 then.

I may have some issues making it this year.
My jeep if falling apart and it will take alot of work to get it up to the level I like it. That being said, here is what I have done and what I need to do. I installed a Stak 3 speed tcase which is pretty cool. But then I managed to get a short to ground, due to damaged motor mounts which in turn let all the smoke out of my wire harness. I am now in the process of installing a painless wiring kit...which has been very painless. My jeep has been down for two weeks and the rear main seal decided to release all my oil.....not good and the engine is making some strange noises....not good. So I guess I am going to finish my wiring( a long time over due) and change the oil and filter and be there....LOL and install a oiling resevoir so my engine will have an endless supply of oil. Cause I do not have time to change that out.

we found mud and plenty of it.
found a big hole on one of the slabs we play at.(cant wait to post that pic)which manage to cut my tranny cooler line.quick fix=cut hose take off return line and hook it back in.and back to camp we went.
hopeing steven gets his ready.
i have invited another fella from texas, goes by fwjeff .met him on texas4x4.org...real nice fella..has a big xj on 42's
I'm sure we can change out a RMS at the KOA if needed.

I hadn't logged in since Oct of last year right before my engine went out. I'm hoping to have my 88 Waggy running by then. I live in El Paso so hopefully I can make it out wheeling with you guys. I've never been out there and would really like to join in the fun.

drp that rig would have alot of trouble following us on most trails, unless body damage isnt a big thing! BTW that is one nice rig..notice the rigs that did get posted, the smallest one being flints rig(wally) has 33" tires on it.and i believe its getting upgraded to a 60 rear end!maybe the vehicle in the rear would better suffice the trails in the robleto mnts
I got to agree with Sam, that's way too nice a rig for the majority of the traditional 'Cruces area trails, but I'm sure it would be fine for just some desert sight seeing and some of the milder stuff.
I'm up for a day of putting around looking at some of the scenic/historical stuff.

I agree with them on that nice GW. I got more new rocker panel and below dings in Wally than all the ones already inflicted over the last 10 years while at Cruces last year. I will not have the axles upgraded for this year's Cruces gathering but I am headed in the right direction with over analysis of the tasks ahead. ;)

Greetings to all,
I have been out of the loop for a while as my rigs have been stowed away for most of the year. There has been a lack of motivation, time and dollars mainly due to a lot of work hours and travel. Good news is that the chop-top only needs a couple of days of work to get it ready for the event. After last years beating, I replaced a large part of the wiring harness, made a battery tray for the new optima battery and went with full high steering. I still need a new cover for the 14 bolt and need to replace the front springs and u-bolts. I have reserved campsite #88 again.
Here is the sad picture of things:

lol i found out i forgot something jaime installed in the cat's old motor. never occurred to me to remove the pilot bushing for a standard tranny! i don't know how i over looked it:o but it(bushing) will be coming out the next day or so
Heimeken
08-07-2010, 11:52 AM
Mmm, are you sure? or does your TH400 not require a sleeve that goes in the same place? I am pretty sure I had the large pilot bushing from Advance adapters in there for the NV4500.

i noticed the center of my t/convert has some marks on the center shaft part, probably why i had a hard time getting it to seat up to the motor. just thought it wasn't lined up just right i guess.
i also noticed some fresh marks on the brass bushing. i will look on the motor i pulled out previous to this one and see if it had one!

She looks a lot different right now. I removed the entire front clip with exceptions of inner fenders. Will be installing a 360 from a 77 Waggy within the next month. I would like to restore her but with a 4"lift. Plan on replacing all bushing and body mounts. Eventually get her painted with new woodgrain and digital dashboard.
I'm probably only doing some scienic viewing during the day not sure about camping. Would like to have the 4" lift before Cruces so I can do a little 4 wheeling but the tires rub if I get a little too sideways and I dont want to cause any more damage.
I will mostly use it to get into some back areas and pull a trailer with the atvs'.
If I can get the 360 in my 88 quickly, I might have time to put the 304 into the 77 Waggy.
It has a 3" Body lift and at least a 4" spring lift upfront with a 2" block and helper spring on the back. 33x15.5x 15 swampers.
Quadratrac works fine, couldn't get it into low and the emergency switch isn't working. If I can get this done by the event, I might take that one.
Sambo
08-08-2010, 09:38 AM
cool! sounds like a lot of work ahead of ya;)
i used to find a constant source of vac for my quadratrac, bypass the switch.
i think i still have my switch out of mine if you want it...
could show up and catch a ride with one of us! hint, hint michael:whistle:

Even if I don't get the lift installed by then, I can pull my trailer and ride the atv. I think it would be great to meet some of the guys behind the thumbnails.

Well Guys,
I'm still in the sandbox so I won't be there to flog the cloud-O-flage Cherk. Doubt it would be up to it anyways...lost oil pressure as I was driving into the Govt. storage facility...Ugh. So it may be DOA and I may have to sell or part it out. Wish I could be there...
And D-rat, they weren't steering you wrong...your nice waggy would not survive. My beater was prodded along and thrashed just to keep up with those guys and I wasn't worried about body work. Even with 33s, a rear locker, and a 4" lift I was like a battleship in a kiddie pool! Get the 77 running and flog that one! You'll have lots of fun and won't feel bad in the morning...unless you hang out at the firepit getting to tipsy...LOL!

Just noticed that all of the tubing to the emergency switch is disconnected. I'll get that taken care of first and go from there. Probably going to have to put off buying my lift kit. School starting, band dues, cheerleader stuff, volleyball stuff etc,etc...at least I'm working now so it wont hurt as bad.

Yeah, I wont take the 88 into the rocks. She has some light damage to the passenger side doors but fixable. There is no rust anywhere, she has been in the desert all her life. The only rust I found was in the fuel tank skid plate. It came in contact with a rock or something and pushed up the spot where the drain hole is and the water would just sit inside the skid plate. I cleaned it off with a 4" angle grinder with wire brush, undercoated it and she is good. Power steering pump was allowed to leak and it ate up all the rubber it came in contact with. I'll be replacing that this weekend. My biggest concern is the brittle wiring harness'. I've considered replacing it but haven't really looked into it yet.

I just got back from Las Cruces yesterday and was wishing that I had towed my heep up there because the weather was awesome! It looks like I will be going there once a month now because my grandmother has been in the hospital for a month there and the grandpaw aint doing too well either but I was thinking I would like to time one of my trips for this event. The entire time I lived there I didnt have a rig to wheel now I do but live across Texas :banghead: !!!
Anyways, I "own" a FSJ that has just moved into my shop for its turn at the wrench and that will one day be my tow rig for my YJ but right now I am technically FSJ-less. I would REALLY like to go on this run but understand completely if this is meant to be an absolute FSJ only event. You think you guys would be too embarassed to run with one of the "little" jeeps? I can even stay at my cousins house so as not to ruin the "FSJ-ness" at the campsite!:D

i think his name was ryan.
Well, it's official.
I'm giving a state mandated test Oct, 28th, it will last most of the day.
We'll probably try to get to Silver City that night as Em does not get home from the base until 5:30 or so, that would put us in Silver about 10pm at best. If we tried to make 'Cruces it would be after midnight, 1am with the time change.
So it looks like we'll be coming in the morning of the 29th.
You folks will probably head out and we'll still have to set up camp, unload, all that jazz.
Looking forward to some good wheeling and friends even though it's not for as many days as we had hoped for.

Well I am down and out this year. Had some issues this past weekend wheelin in Clayton Oklahoma....long story, but basically needs an engine, axle swap etc.... and I did not see much of the trail....so who has an extra seat that can pick me up from the airport?
Good news.....
1. Engine replacement...have one sitting in the shop which was going into Jodies project, guess she will get the 401....:drivin:
2. Ummmm well I guess I will be putting my Rockwells in and swapping my axles over to Jodies future toy.

For future reference, I prefer using bar soap to pack in behind the pilot bushing... especially if the flywheel is still in place. (in the case of an auto/flexplate it wouldn't matter). I just think the cleanup from the soap is easier. Also had a bad experience with a dowel that was slightly undersized allowing some of the highly compressed grease by. Decided it would not have been fun to catch that in the eye!
Congrats on your successful completion of the task and survivin.... er I mean celebrating 15 yr's of wedded bliss! (We just celebrated our 19th last weekend!)

hey all, I'm a bit of a newbie to the fsj world. I want to come to this event this year but I won't have my jeep anywhere close to ready. I just got a 75 waggy a few weeks ago and I hope to have it done (or at least worthy of some lighter trails) by next year.

I just bought a 1979 j10 yesterday!! Woot woot! Ive been dreaming for the last couple of years of getting one and putting a compound 4bt.... Although its a long ways....long long ways... from getting there im excited that i have the truck. I went out yesterday to push it alittle. well alittle turned to alot.
1st i checked all oils and i think this thing still had the 1st or 2nd radiator change of its life. took like 10-12 water changes to get all the rust out and gunk out. no leaks yay!!!
It has approximately 34k miles or maybe 134k but by the looks of all the engine and cab im thinkin its 34k. It has all the original parts. quadratrac works great. makes some odd humming noises one in a while but its from the engine i think (bands or something like that)
The low gear goes in nice and also the emergency light comes on when i engage it..
Lights in the interior are dead!!!! nothing. but wipers work the radio and one speaker work coooool. exterior air conditioning is top notch. lol all windows roll down ahhhh. JA JA
Um down side with my nice little wheeling i threw out the front shock absorber its dangiling there like a booble toy ja ja. So i got my work cut out. Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley i miss having a 4x4 truck! Have a Jeep Liberty but it just ain the same.
Sorry about the long thread im just excited on the this project to come.
I want to join you guys at Cruses but no way in hell my jeep is going to make it behind anyone of u guys. So any seats available to a NOOB>? :fsj:

Waiting on my Tom Wood's front drive shaft. Will get the rear tires soon, 35's. Need to anchor the parking brake sleeves. Just a few loose ends after that and I hope she is ready to go.
I've reserved site 90. I'm contemplating bringing out the dogs, but since this will basically be her maiden voyage, I'd hate for something to go wrong and have to worry about the dogs. I'll also have a couple of empty seats. Don't think I'll be doing any extreme wheeling. Haven't trimed my wheel wells and not sure I want to right now. Looking forward to hanging with you guys.

i used to want a FSJ then got out of the mood, seeing y'alls rigs makes me want one again
Nice to see some new faces interested, looks to be a great year
Oct is starting to look bad for Em, big work project still not complete.
If Em is out I'll try to stab rstep into the rig, if that don't work I'll bring my cat.

...all I need is a couple of shafts and a lot of oil...
Rear shafts for an 80's J20 axle I am thinking?
Got to be some in TX (no 80's stuff in my yard).
Be happy to help with the oil if it means the rig gets to come.
Anyone know right off hand what the kingpin preload is for a GM front D60?

Let me know Sambo, if I can find shafts, and if the engine will allow one more run than I am in. The engine lost all oil to the top last run, but is running ok now, it is going to go soon. I just do not want it to go in
the middle of bfe

i know. it was to perfect not to use it. it was just right to mount to the frame. i needed a place to mount my winch. and it makes for a convenient step to work on the jeep. it does hang a little low though

This is what happens when you havent been on the site for a couple of months. I am up in ABQ and this is not that far away. I dont have any offroad vehicle here with me.
I might make it to this. Maybe my friend with his J Truck will want to go.

Contact info for the KOA (Leah is the manager) is on that page, I really have not kept track of who is where and in what space on a map this year.
I would call her/ them since the date is so close.
...
And I got good news yesterday
I'll be able to come in on Thursday the 28th instead of Friday.
Probably won't be early but it will be enough to unload, setup and possibly get in a short afternoon/evening run.

I am sorry to hear that Flint. Wish you and your family well. I wish you could have made it. I just made my reservations yesterday and Leah said all the camping sites were taken so I ended up in a cabin. Have you called them yet? Maybe I should call her.

we'll miss you and luna, and say hello to corpus for me! havent been home in several years now. almost 8 yrs now:eek:
Best thoughts Flint, we'll catch up in November.
We probably need to secure that spot for one of us, or at least keep it as the party spot since it's right off the kitchen.
I think I'll bring a microwave this year.
On a side note:
Shall we do something for Halloween?

I guess let it ride until Friday, if no one speaks up you're going to have to cancel.
Does anyone want to split this with me and keep it as a party spot?

We should keep it. So, I think we need to pay Flint for the day he has paid for, then once we get there we will just split it up....I am sure I will end up crashing in a chair there....

I don't need any money back. Willing to donate the day paid up front to the cause.
Just read my confirmation email Flint.
You'll be under the cancelation deadline.
Should just be a $10 charge and I just sent the email to Leah.
I have confirmation back from Leah, both sites are in my name from Thursday am to Sunday am.
Janie has already sent me some cash and we'll catch up on the rest about this time next week
