I am on my way to pick up my J-10 in a few minutes so now I have to make a decision to try to get it to run or use it for parts. So my question is the po said that three pushrods slip out from under the rockerarms.
Am I thinking right that it will most likely be collapsed lifters or a very badly worn camshaft? I would like to keep this as the price was right and I could always use a truck to haul Jeep parts around smile.gif
As always thanks in advance...this is the greatest site and you guys are the best source of information  tongue.gif

Um, if the body's in good shape, don't even think about parting it out...send it to me! smile.gif j/k....really though, even if you end up plopping in a different engine(preferably another 258!) or rebuild this one, it's worth it. I can't comment on the pushrods part as I'm not the best with the internals, but someone else might help more there. I just wanted to recommend that you not part this thing out....lots easier to find a replacement engine than another J10 as they don't make these trucks anymore! smile.gif
BTW...you didn't mention what tranny setup this has got. If you've got a 4 speed behind that 258, KEEP IT! Best bloody combination I've had in a FSJ yet! Even if it's a 3 speed, those are nice simple trannies too. But, I recommend fixing what you need to....J10s are nice! smile.gif I am biased..what else is new???? :D
Take care....

pop out the pushrods ,check them out, and the rocker arms too. iirc, my bro-in-law, ran across this in a chero 258.

The 258 in my 79' Cherokee did the same thing 3 times. It would be runnin fine and then on restarting it would have a nasty skip as soon as it began to run. The pushrod on #6 exhuast would be off the rocker when I pulled the valve cover. The fix (after the 3rd time) was a new set of rockers for that cylinder. It's been 6 months with no recurrance.
Hope this helps

Thanks guys. At least this is a starting point. The p/o said three pushrods do this little trick. The odemeter shows 78,000 on it. I don't know if its a three speed or the 4 yet. Just to little time to check things out.
I need to get the Wag up and running before I can start on this project. It looks real cool though and I think it is a keeper. If I can still recover it I may have a head off a 93 6 cyl. another project where I did not clean up after myself and may have lost it. Oh well a phone call tomorrow and I might know.
Again guys this is the best site going...and everyone here is great.

Oh, and I believe you can use rocker arms from an AMC V-8s on the I-6 engines. Often times it costs the same or less for the kit, and you're getting 2 more rockers to boot.
