View Full Version : Rear Drum prices?

Don't ya love when prices vary like the tides! Checked on prices for drums for my '78 J10 and first got a $79.95 price(plus core), and so passed on those puppies. Looked in JC-whipme over the weekend and they TWO different listings for J-series rigs. One section lists 79-91 at $27.98 each. The other sections lists(apparently better than OEM for Jeeps): for 77-91 at $59.95 each.

Checked at my regular parts store today, and got a price of $38.80 each.

Ok...a couple questions on the JCW ones....why is there a difference there? AND...why are '79-91 listed for the first, but not '78 back? I wasn't aware of changes...were there any?

How does this compare to anyone else's experiences with drum prices? Just curious so I know before I drop more $$$ than I need to on them! Looking to do all new brake stuff when I so the bearing job.

Thanks for any input....

I had a bad experince once with cheap drums, they were so out of round I had to replace them. My advice is to go with a made in the USA brand and pay the extra dollars. There are a lot of things to skimp on but brakes are not one of them. Our Jeeps are heavy and they need all the stoping power they can get. Thats my .02 cents

Good timing on that question! I just took mine into a local Les Schwab Tire store to have my rear brakes done and when he pulled them off they both had 1/4 inch deep groves worn in them and they were already out of spec (11.60?? I think) for turning so they needed to order new ones. They were $98 bucks apiece, although they were lifetime warranty and supposedly better than oem for some reason (didnt catch why). So anyways I had him put the old ones back on because I just dont have $200 bucks to spend on brake drums!

I just finished doing my own on the 88GW. I went with the Raybestos (us made at Pepboys) $70 or so each. My father-in-law a parts counter man said that even brand new drums and rotors should be slightly turned. Even from the factory their not perfect. Two other parts stores have confirmed this.

This isn't about the brake thing. I was just wondering how close you were to the tornado that hit that area a couple of days ago, Michael?

WOW! I just checked out your site (I am slowly getting to everyone's on here). I didn't know you were so close to duluth. I graduated from cherry high school on "Da Range". My Mother and one brother and my sister now live and work in Duluth. I am planning to go up that way in the middle of August for a wedding. Maybe we can get together.

A great parts-store in my hometown would turn any drums and rotors you bought, as a matter of course. That, my friends, is the sign of a GREAT store:

A) They care that the parts you buy are going to work as well as possible, and

B) They have tools on-site to do basic machine-shop work that is otherwise a PITA or time-consuming to get done...

If you're talking about the one Monday night....oh, only about 10-15 miles as the crow flies! As the Jeep flies, about 20 miles(obviously they don't fly as well). Siren was the town that got nailed bad....mostly demolished. Pretty nasty I guess.....lots of work going on there just cleaning up and that. 3 or 4 people dead.....none that I knew, but one was a relative of a relative kinda thing, so not nice on that angle. I've got friends who live in Siren area but they lived on the end of town that hopefully didn't get hit...I've tried calling but haven't gotten through yet(phone lines are not all working). But...here, wind, rain, peasized hail...nothing major....just stormy. Siren was hit on a 4th of July tornado in 1976 as well, and have gotten a few other nasty storms over the years as well. All in all....too close for comfort, but no damage in the neighborhood. Thanks for asking though....appreciate the concern!

Take care...

PS....yep, Duluth's always one of my favorites. I lived there for about 9 years....will always feel it a bit "home"! STILL love the lake when I get up there. I'm about 1.5 hours south right now, but like nearly any reason to get up there! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif I'll likely be making some trips to the Twin Ports in August, so yes, that would be cool if we could get together. Just drop me a note and we can see about that! Take care...

You are very fortunate Bob, a lot of these chain stores don't get it. And you guys are right of course those new drums and rotors should be trued before installation.

Ok, I got my drums from....a guy...(thinking hard here)...named...<DoH>! Can't remember. His company is called Rigid Steel I think, I believe his name is Dan? He has all the brake parts, and he sells them rather cheap.

I'll keep looking for the website and contact info for ya.

Sam
Aaah...Daniel Phelps is the name. Company is Rigid. Website is www.crocker.com/rigid (http://www.crocker.com/rigid)

I've had no trouble with his products, even though I don't know their port of origin.
