View Full Version : Vacuum lines, charcoal cannister, and other such stuff...

On one hand, I decided to put in the charcoal canister that my 76 J10 had shed long ago, I got tired of seeing so many plugged vacuum and questionable vacuum line routing... on the other hand, it's running great now, so why stir the pot?
But those plugged lines are bugging me! Problem is, none of my manuals show a decent, CLEAR vacuum line routing and the little sticker under the hood is long since gone. Are there any sources (make that "free sources") that offer a clear diagram of hose routing? The tech section archives don't seem to cover this one unless I missed something...

And just where does that cannister mount, anyway?

That would be for a '76 258- forgot to mention that.

You need the fuel/vent/full routing for a Townside or Thiftside box 76 J10? Tanks fill routing is different between the two beds. The canister mounts near the radiator on the sixes.

I didn't know the beds came any way but what I'd call fleetside (I think?) as opposed to step side. What's the difference? Mine is like every other picture I've seen of a 76 J-10 which I'd guess would be the townside?

If I can't figure this part out maybe I'd better stay away from the vacuum lines!

Yup Townside. The Thriftside is what some call stepside with external fenders. I figured you had the common one so I emailed you the pics you need awhile ago...should have gotten to you by now?

Got the pictures, thanks- they've explained alot already. One thing I do notice is that my canister has 4 hose connections and not 3 like the picture. The extra one on mine is labeled "distributor". My distributor vacuum is hooked into a vacuum line coming from the lower part of the block (manifold side) from one of two steel tubes coming from that point.

I do see that my gas tank has at least 2 lines unconnected, one from the canister and one from the fuel filter (return line) that's plugged off. didn't realize that there's an in-line filter at the tank too. Have to check that out as well. Thanks.

Prolly not a stock canister. The can should have only 3 nips which are used with the 258. The same 3 nip can is also used w/360 but the nipple for the float bowl line is plugged. I would just plug/cap the 4th one on your canister.

There is one between the pump and carb though and the fuel return line nipple on it needs to be in the up/on top/12 o'clock postion to work properly.
Maybe someone added an aftermarket inline canister type filter? Not a bad thing but I'd put a new one in while your messing around down there. No telling how long it's been since replacement.

My mistake in reading the picture correctly. I was looking at the filter that is within the tank and not an additions in-line filter. No need to mess with that until I have too. Thanks for your help.
