Somebody (cu4wheelin maybe) had their dash pad recovered in leather.
But yeah, the holes in the dash are patchable, as the original contoured metal dash is still basically unchanged underneath the dash pad.

I believe it was Sportside Dan who did his dash pad in leather.

I was thinkin the same thing
If you hand carry the pad into an auto upholstery place shouldn't be too expensive. .Last one I had done a few years ago was $75, done w/vinyl not leather. It's a real easy piece to recover. If I were to do it again I'd buy the material do it myself.

I am planning to use a '60s dash in Levi; no need to worry about the dash pad. Got it free. I figure, why not? lol
I modified the early dash (inspired by a member named Towtruck who did similar) for the SuperChief.

Our dash pad is in really good shape, except it sags in the front so the ash tray on the driver's side won't open. It doesn't easily push out of the way - anyone else have this happen?

Just your standard dash. 6x9 hole in the top for a speaker. Holes all around the edges for the dash pad bolts, etc... A year later and I still need to install the radio and fix the glove box latch!

Here's an old, in process photo of a late model dash (left half) welded to to an early model version. The stamping on the early dash is much nicer and it doesn't have the speaker hole. Splice line sort of zigzags in the vicinity of the left ash tray. Saves filling the speaker hole and changes the look of the dash. The right side defroster vent must be swapped (cut out and the later version welded in) if the vehicle has air conditioning. Allows you to keep the original instrument cluster, wiring, and steering column mount. If you decide to pull the dash to weld up the holes, you might as well get creative...

Dr Teeth on this board put green LEDs in the holes in his dash. I haven't decided which way to go, yet. For sure I'm better at bolting stuff in than meticulous body work.

I'm am so interested in what had to be done for each of your dash pad replacement projects. I'm in the same boat. My pad has cracked at the speaker grill (which is totally gone) and it is now curling upwards and cracking into little pieces. Would love to find a pad and just do a swap out but now I'm thinking of doing something more custom if possible.
It's a '77 J10 and originally a blue interior, but the truck will most likely be repainted to White, with flat black trim. So the interior can be basically any color other than black (Summers are just way too hot out here for black and no A/C.
Can you guys explain more or give options? Thanks

I did that on my 77 Cherokee. I don't need anymore than one speaker in my Jeep.:D

I am curious, If I yank the pad off my '77 how much would I have to fill in the way of holes? Does anyone have a pic of one before filling? I dont mind the speaker hole, I would like to keep it for my CB speaker. But I just dont know about the rest I am not very good with body work.

Bondo is the easiest thing in the world to work with. Mix, fill hole, wait 20 min, sand it smooth. So provided your sense of touch still works it shouldn't be a problem. Wally world and all auto parts stores sell the stuff and it's pretty cheap, so if your still hesitant just spend $20 and play with some of it before you rip out your dash.

Looks like a replacement TJ passenger grab handle. Q-tec sells one made of Billet aluminum for like $80.

Just read your post and took a couple of quick pictures for you. This is the original dash from my 76 Cheif. I am working with fiberglass on a 86 dash to practice on until I get the design sorted - changing heater controls, adding double din stereo and Western Star style switches.
Hope this pictures help. Additionally I find fiberglass a little messy but not too bad to work with.
Good luck
