What are these two "copper" colored things that bolt onto each exhaust manifold and look kind of like a 70's style smoking paraphanelia that also has 1" air hoses going to them and one of them connects to catalytic converter. What are they called? I asked the parts guy at the dealer and all he could give me was attitude?? I broke one, does it need to be replaced other then for passing emisions????

LOL I call them smog logs. I think the correct name is air injection tubes. However I am sure there are a couple dozen different names for them depending who you talk to. What side did you break off. I have 2 near new looking for the right side (passenger) ;)

CJ,
Coincidently enough I broke the passenger side. What the heck do they do and are yours for sale or would it be simpler for me to just buy them some where how much are they???/

Best bet is probably a salvage yard and any old AMC out there. When I was looking for one everyone wanted $100 even used! I bought the air injection rail, exhaust manifold, hose and diverter valve for $30. Now I have a spare exhaust manifold and would have had to spend about $50 for the diverter valve.

Good luck, been there done that,

If you can find some in a yard that are in good shape then get them. I believe that they are available from the "Help" line of parts though you would have to order them. As I recall people paid $35-$40 a piece for them. That or maybe your local head shop could fabricate something for you ;)

I just bought new ones for each side. They both broke when I was pulling the motor. The passenger side was approximately $37 and the driver side was approximately $33. One was a HELP part and the other was a Motormite.

Try Checker Auto, Auto Zone or a similar store. It's called an air pump check valve. At Checker it is part #FE476 and costs $11.50. smile.gif
