View Full Version : I may have to give it up

After throwing a rod in the Red Wagon, I have not been able to locate another engine within 1000 miles! I did find one (and only one) and it is in Oklahoma. I'm not crazy about trying to ship it 1600 miles, put it in and try to find parts for it in a year or so. To keep it, the only other option I can see is to do a complete transplant with a Chebby or F*rd drivetrain. It seems to be about the same money, just a lot more time.

I guess I could use some encouragement on this thing. It gets really depressing to see this bright red jeep sitting in the driveway and it won't go.

Have you shopped around for a truck with a decent used engine such as a wrecked one?? If yours was not too high a milage hows about a short block? On the up side it's alot better to have to look at a truck as nice as yours in the driveway even if it doesn't run.

What kind of engine is in it? I will keep my eyes peeled. I'm not really that close at all, but if I see something I'll let you know.

I really like that truck a lot! Keep on Jeepin!!

Hit the AMC lists and ask around, then rather than asking at the "top line"
junk yards they only carry stuff for the last 5 years or so, ask around at the
one line ad yards from the yellow pages they tend to be the older yards with
more interesting (to us any way) stuff.

Have you tried small towns? I have found some in small junkyards and behind barns. How about a crate engine? http://remanufactured-engines.com/page20.htm

I've heard some good things about these guys.

Hey, where are all of those Georgia guys when you need them?? Are they bogartin' all of the 360's?

Since finding the hole in the side of the block, I've checked EVERY boneyard within 200 miles. Not one of them have anything AMC. Also, I've called just about every reman shop south of Tampa. Without exception each has said they could rebuild one if I bring it in since they do not have any AMC cores around. Of course, that brings the cost near the $2000 mark not counting the price of a block to begin with and the incidental stuff that crops up.

I hate to give it up, but I don't have many options left. The Red Wagon was our family daily driver. Currently we're borrowing my father-in-law's car. I've got to do something soon. More than $2500 and the time to do the job would make a decent down payment on something less obsolete.

I haven't made any decisions yet, but time is running out.

what about your other two FSJs in your sig? you might be able to do a transplant.

Have you tried Autozone or Advance Autoparts?

I would suggest parking it, throwing a car cover on it, and just let it sit while you get another daily driver.

You need to get out from under the:

"The Red Wagon was our family daily driver. Currently we're borrowing my father-in-law's car. I've got to do something SOON."

pressure.

Your Wag is way to nice to give up on now and you spent a gazillion hours getting it that way. I would say get another daily driver and then the pressure will be off and you can fix the Wag as time and finances permit. AMC 360's are fairly common. The week after you get rid of your pristine Wag, I can virtually gauranty that you will see 401 powererd rust-out Wag in your local paper for $300. So I would say get a daily driver. Deal with the Wag later.

I completely agree with Chero77. But then again, that's how come I got 4 cars and only one of them runs. But at least one of the ones that don't is an FSJ!

Hey Greg,

I will look around here (Louisiana now) and try to find something for you. I will hopefully be down there the first of the year. I have found 2 wags here decent. 1 is an 89 with a decent motor...could probably use a rebuild. Great body and wood, also has a moonroof. 1000 bucks. found another..a 90 great shape 3000 bucks.

Melissa said to tell the wife and kids hey for me and we hope to be there soon. Also tell mr Sells I owe him lunch when we get back.

I know you are not looking for a race engine, but they do have some 401's and 360's for sale. Hope this will help you out.

Hey Andy!!

It's great to hear from you. Please let me know if you find something. For the moment I'm driving the silver/blue WT to work everyday. The white one is still at the body shop. I haven't had time to do anything to it since you were last here (by the way, it needs engine and tranny as well). Can't wait to see y'all. I still haven't mastered Euchre, but I did go on a cruise and won a nice watch in a poker game.

Shift Capt.- is that place really in Canada?

I guess so, I have not ordered from them. I have checked the engine section many times for one sweet engine on the "Christmas Wish List".

it's too bad you can't find an engine. i guess you'll have to ship it to me. ya, that's right, just ship it to me. i'll pay the freight, and don't forget to sign the title! LOL :D
try this junk yard. it is in san antonio. they have stuff cheap and maybe you can get him to ship you a good/rebuildable engine. you might be able to get an engine for around 200-300? shipping would probably be about 200? not sure about that.
their number is 210-627-9900
i was there about two weeks ago and they had 5 or 6 GW's. i would not tell him you are from out of town until you get him to give you a price on the engine ;) then ask about shipping :D
good luck

I don't know what you have for part shops down there but up here a new crate AMC 360 for my jeep would cost $1200

I bought my first FSJ about two months ago,,,I mean "we". The oil pressure dropped to nothing the first week and the engine was done... We purchased a REman Gopher 360 from NAPA (best price and service..here anyway) and with all the labor including all the little things..like water pump..fixing radiator..intake gaskets..ect. it came to $2600 and she runs great. I did alot of research and even called the factory and these guys really stand behind their stuff. Do a search of Gopher engines..

2600 seems like a ton of money..but it's only a few car payments on "something less obsolete". And We put it into something that looks NOTHING NEAR AS GOOD AS YOURS DOES..
Good Luck

i know its a hard decision to put the money out on a crate motor or a rebuilt(i've been there)but then i compare the money i would put out 2-3000 compared to the 30,000 plus on a new vehicle plus ours are a lot more versatile,AND PAID FOR!!!!

gbarret,
I just found 2 '84 Wags at a boneyard near here (Daphne, AL; 45 miles West of Pensacola, FL) both with 360's. The guy wasn't sure if they run, but he was gonna check them out and let me know. He said around $500 if it runs, and $100 if it doesn't. I'll try to find out mileage, whether running, etc. if you're interested, and I'll go take a look.

Hey Jbreak,

When you talk to those guys at that boneyard, ask them if they remember a bright red Wagoneer with a blown transfer case sitting in a motel parking lot. Believe it or not, nearly 2 years ago my xfer case blew up and a guy from a salvage yard just outside Daphne bailed me out. He had a case that would bolt up, but it required a different driveshaft, so they had one built for me in Mobile and delivered it to me at the motel. Yes, I changed the case and did all the repair in the parking lot of that motel. My kids still think it was a great adventure - new town, no real schedule, I guess it was fun.

As far as engines go, I'm trying to get the Jeep running quickly. I'm going to try a few new angles on solving the problem. Funds are tight, but fixing the wagon is still cheaper than a new tupperware truck. So, I guess I'm open for suggestions.

Thanks.

There's still a mid 80's GW just west of cape coral with a new engine in it. $2k would probably take it, and lots of other parts to sell out and recover your money. It's in pretty good shape.

I understand the obsolete part of the problem, nobody around here stcks anything for these motors. A 350 would definately make more sense in that respect

did you call PAW?
a Short Block 360 runs $1500, last I looked, and they give you choice of cam, pistons, etc.
the caveat is that you must assemblethe engine yourself smile.gif

Gbarret, I may have a running 360 within a few weeks that I could let go for a cheap price. I live in Acworth (about 30 miles north of Atlanta). Email me at rhart@eberly.net and I'll give some details, if you are still interested and it isn't too far.

There are at least two GWs with 360s in them here at our boneyard in Jacksonville. Contact me by email if you want more info. I don't know the condition of the engines. But I was getting stuff off of the Jeeps and remember that the engines were there.

Are you looking for one with every thing or for one oil pan to carb flexplate to timing cover?
